Hey,

Hello, this is my first visit to this site (nice site!). I have been wanting to pick up a Mustang for some time, but I just can't justify cost to performance ratios. Large cost, small performance. This brought my attention to the GN :) . From what I understand, it is an INCREDIBLE machine. As of right now, I am trying to find one for around 4-8k. I want something to modify. My friend told me to get an 87, so that's the year I am after, he seems to know cars well.

Back to purpose of this post. Where are some good links to mods and power adding tools? What are some of the real basic mods to start off with, including cost, manufacturer, and where I can find em. I am really new to the turbo v6 era, but from what I hear, they were one hell of a motor.

Welcome aboard! If you do decide to purchase one, you definitely won't regret it!

Everything you need to know can be found on these very pages and gnttype.org

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/recipepage.html

There is no other car (new or old) in my opinion, that can give you the performance per dollar, drivabillity, fuel mileage, and reliabillity that you can have with a turbo buick!

I had one brand new in 1987 and foolishly sold it in 1990. The worst thing I had ever done! I thought about an SVT Lightning, but couldn't justify a $40,000 pick-up truck! So for under $40k I bought an 89 TTA and a 87 GN. Now the rice clan have a choice of what they want to get beat by.

Have fun, I sure am! :D

Welcome

With stock parts you can get a solid 12 with a good tune, high octane fuel, and good tires/drag radials or slicks. Some have gone 11's. When I say stock, that is everything except smart required mods like the fuel pump, adj fp regulator, filter, chip, and exhaust (not much). I am new to the cars and racing, see sig, but you can see what is possible quickly.

I had the chance to ride in a low 12 second Mustang this weekend, and it was a good experience, pulled good. It sounded good, drove ok, looked like it took off good, but it had everything to run this time---heads, cam, headers, supercharger, gears, intake, etc. So that made me appreciate my cars even more. I don't think they 60' too well with the shorter wheelbase. Don't know what the suspension is. His eighth was 7.8x @94 with a bad 60' and 115 in the quarter. Should have been a mid 11 with the mph. My point is, the Buicks do well in stock form and hook up well for a good ET.

Try www.gnttype.org for tons of info, mods, recipes for speed, cars for sale, parts vendors, etc. Cars for sale here also. Use the search function on this site for more specific info on any one item, its very helpful.

For your upper price range, you can find around a 50k minimum mileage car with basic good mods. Take advice from your friend if he has been around them awhile as he can steer you in the right direction. Good Luck

Thanks for the reponses! Are there any good magazines featuring mainly Turbo Buicks?

Thanks,
Steve

GM High Tech Performance is about the only one. Car Craft and Hot Rod might have a little blurb like once a year.

Stick around on this board though, you will learn 10 times more stuff here than you ever would reading out of a magazine. It has all been done here. Plus, you can ask questions and actually get them answered.

Hrm. I guess my biggest problem now is finding a car! I have looked through as many classifieds as I can, and can't find any that seem to be reasonably close \ affordable for me. Any leads?

Thanks again!,
Steve

I would say keep a close eye on the for sale section on this site. I see you are on the east coast. I would contact some of the vendors out there like Jack Cotton to see if they have any customer cars for sale. Someone from the east coast could recommend someone better than I can.

If you find something reasonable on this board you can find out a little about the car. A little trick I did was do a search on the name of the person selling. You can see all the threads the person has subscribed to. For example, if they have had any major problems with the car. I remember one car I was considering locally, untill i did a search and saw he was having all kinds of trans problems the week before. Most people on here are honest and upfront though.

Look for a 86-87 GN. T-Type both the years were the same.
