Flywheel/Converter Hub?

Started getting ready to pull the engine on a GN I just bought and found this thing in between the flywheel and the converter.
Why is it there?
It's supposed to be aan Art Carr non lock up converter.

It looks there is some sort of centering hub that is attached to the flywheel bolts?

Or some type of support to spread the load around the bolts to keep the flywheel from cracking?
