Jack Cotton Says...

I spoke to Jack Cotton the other day about other matters and he happened to mention to me that there has been a rash of failures with the ATR wastegates lately, and for me to beware. I've had mine for about 5 years now with no problems, but that may be your problem....

Derrick

Should I sent it back to ATR or send it to Jack Cotton to have him fix it?

I think you should ask whoever you bought it from... It just happens to be something Jack brought up to me when I said what I had.

Jackson, so no problem with the diaphram, did check if the valve is actualy moving? If you look at the valve stem you should see a clean portion showing how much the valve has moved, if there is no sign of movement then the guide bushing might be binding. You can drill it out for more clearence, I did when I rebuilt my older style ATR gate.

ATR W/G failures

I have 1 that someone can buy REAL cheap!!
I got it new and was told by Phil at ATR it had to be "modified for 1000 hp use". sent it back. Got it back and then had John Craig "modify it' again. [I think John puts a stainless valve guide in it.]
Put it on again... It seemed to leak as boost rise was slow...
Took it off and found that the leaking gases had eroded the mild steel flange it mounted to.[ATR headers too] The erosion was the perfect diameter of the ID of the copper gasket. This left the end of the stainless tube projecting thru the flange as the sealing surface. It was not flat or round.... Therefore the leak, and it's trip to the "trash shelf"!!!  Lasted <500 mi. and 20 passes. [Along w/ alot of other crap that doesn't work!!]

THE CURE IS: Call Cotton, order the INNOVATIVE "Pro Gate". It will fit the flanges previously used w/ the ATR. All I did was to elongate the bolt holes a tad and WHAMO..
This is a NICE piece!! [Better'n my last girlfriend!!] It has an internal valve seat, is stainless, is coated, and LOOKS GOOD!! [Again, better'n my last WIFE!!]:D :D

Back to kissin my new WG!!:p :p

update!

Here's what I found, the valve is stuck and rusted out! I spoke to John Craig and he's going to fix and modify it .
