Vehicle is 1996 Sable GS
Approximate 119,000 Miles

Rotors & Pads most recently replaced at 113,500 Miles November 2010

The calipers were most recently replaced at 96,600 Miles December 2008.

Back in August it felt like the car was rolling too slowly at coasting very low speeds. A short time later on the highway very strong odor of brakes, almost like a truck someplace in front had just slammed on its brakes.

Even now when the car is started from park, put it in gear and it strains to move at all.

Anybody run across this before?
With any car whether Mercury or not?

I took it to a local place (not ford dealership) and the mechanic couldn't find the problem at a quick glance. It was barley doing it at all that time when I drove it over to his place (about 10 miles), he took a couple measurements and the Front Left Brake Caliper Measured 195F, Front Right Brake Caliper Measured 160F.

The car has been sitting pretty much since then occasionally started and run, but not driven.

Ran the car for about half hour idling in park earlier this evening.
Put it in drive and it doesn't move at all now....

Any advice, input, suggestions, direction appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

This can happen when the brake hoses get porous. They allow air in but don't let it escape. You apply the brakes and they basically don't release. The solution is likely replace the brake hoses and re-bleed. Fairly cheap to try, less than $10 per hose.

Had something similar happen to the rear calipers on my Excursion last year. First one, then the other. I finally got tired of trying to grease the slide bolts and replaced the calipers AND the rubber lines on the rear axle (3).

Thank You Dave!
Thank You John.

Put this same message up on Mercury forums and nothing but the sound of crickets off in the distance!

This place is simply the best!

The booster probably came apart. I did a bunch of tbirds never a sable. Unbolt master cylinder from booster and see if it releases if it does the booster came apart internally.good luck

Will get it over this coming week and update then.

Right Front Caliper Hose

Thanks again to all for your opinions & input.

The problem was the right brake caliper hose assembly.
About a $50 part and half hour of labor.
