Did a search on this but could not find any reference. I'm trying to get to .003-.006 front end play but even with the thickest pump washer, I'm only going to be able to get down around .015.

Has anyone ever ground down an additional snap ring or made some kind of shim to take up play at the other end of the input shaft between the snap ring and the carrier?

Are you sure your measuring correctly? The pump shim is to set the clearance between the O.D. carrier and the pump. It's not used to set the shaft end play if I'm reading your post correctly.

I definitely could be misinterpreting something here, this is my first rebuild. You got me thinking about it, so subtract the shaft end play reading from the total dial indicator reading of shaft travel and that would be the pump to carrier clearance?

Correct :)

I do it this

There is some FREE upward travel then from there is your setting. Kind of hard to explain. With the trans in the upright position (input straight up)--I clamp a dial indicator to the belhousing flange with the indicator sitting on a bolt dropped into the input shaft hole.(check ball removed). The free upward travel is the amount of play @ the snap ring. Once that is taken out--then you pull HARDER to get your endplay. Best of luck.

.003 to .006.more is ok but its nice to keep it tight.subtract the clearance you have between the snap ring and drum from overall readingand this is your end clearance.
