what do you all use to clean your rough casting fmic (not polished) mine is getting some oxidation/hard water stains and what looks alot like rust:confused: specks all over it, any clues as to wtf that is?

No responses huh? Since its not really a Tech question. Lets put this in Restoration/Body/Showcar. Alot of people love cleaning intercoolers over there.

You are picking up small specks of metal from brake dust and rusting cars. Then it sticks on your intercooler and then it rusts. I painted mine satin black, it's very thin and it won't affect cooling, just my opinion.
Tarey D.

Use aluminum cleaner like eagle one , they sell it for wheels in a spay bottle . I use it on my PTE frontmount before i sold it .

i spent 4 hours with a pressurized rotary sanding device and ground the finish down to a smooth finish. than i took some light sand paper and wet sanded it for an hour. than i used mothers polish on it and now it looks fully polished.

it removed all of the oxidation and "rustlike" coloring that it had colected on the previous owners car.

well i used the eagle one aluminum cleaner, BIG mistake, sure it removed the rust but it also cause half of the intercooler to turn white with oxidation:rolleyes:

ergy can i see a picture of your front mount? im not 100% SURE about how im gona deal with this. my header pannel is cracked so i cant run a grill so i cant have any thing ugly atleast for another year.

When you use the Eagle one use a brush , i used a stainless steel parts brush to scrub the end tanks and where else i could grt it into , dont forget you have to wash it off too . Sorry if you didnt like the results it worked good on my PTE .

It was also off the car when i used it doing it on the car i could see making it harder .

i think every one else was mistaken in the other thread about a coating being on the intercooler because after a few hours of work i got it back to normal but who knows.

i got all of the oxidation off, i think the fact that i wasent using a good brush or had a good source of water at the time hindered me.

i actually got most of it off farily easily today, after a while of scrubbing it with several diffrent products and letting it dry there was no diffrence so then i rubed my finger accross it and WTF it came off on my finger:confused: but it would not come off with cleaners.

i think i might not have washed off all of the soap resadue and it "loosened" the oxidation. yesterday NOTHING would get it off but today it whiped off with just alittle rubbing from a finger. i had the whole "well ill be damned" expression for about 30 mins:D it looks like new now.

its still got a few rust spots to take care of but i think im gona leave them for a while:p

See you just gotta work it , in the other thread you said i steared you the wrong way , kinda pissed me off , i was trying to help and it worked out on my F.M great .
