someone told me the front pump is blown, i plan on rebuilding the tranny but do i have to replace the pump or is it part of the rebuild? what is meant by blown when talking about the pump/ what parts need to be replaced. The tranny doesn't go into any gear..no funny noises...

A "Blown Pump" could mean anything but eludes to you have no pump pressure. It could be anything from broken pump rings to a broken rotor or slide etc. Pump rebuild parts are usually seperate from a normal rebuild kit. What were the circumstances in which the trans died? Were you driving it when it just fell out of gear or did you just go to start it and it just wouldn't go anywhere? You could put a pressure gage on the pressure tap and see if you have pressure. That will give you a good idea of what happen.

Easy way to tell if the pump is working, just pull off one of the cooler lines & see if it pumps oil out. If it does it will make a mess.
An even easier way is to check the fluid level with the engine off. Then start it and check the level again. If it dropped the pump is working. If not then its broke. Replace the pump as an assembly. Do not try not try and throw one together with a new rotor and slide unless you have the machines necessary to grind the parts to get proper clearance. Be sure to get a set of hardened rings.
Thanks guys, I will try a couple of those ideas, I just got the car and thats what I was told. Will try that idea about fluid level running/not running. I have another trans from years ago that "blew" was driving it and then just went away, added fluid and went a few hundred feet and that was it, but has been in the weeds for many years. looks good except the shafts coming out from the front are rusted, could they be cleaned up, tumbled and reused or best to get a new or used one, its not going to be a high HP car just for the track, maybe 3-400hp, so I dont want to have to buy new billet stuff if I can avoid it. Where is the best place to get the pump, dont need a fancy one, just one that will work. Thanks for the tips.
