I'm putting together the chassis for my '87 Limited now, and I need to get the front springs in.

If I mount the rear suspension, body, engine/drivetrain, etc (everything but the front clip), will there be enough weight to compress the spring when I use a jack under the front control arm?

I've had spring compressors break in the past, so I'd rather not use one if I don't have to. I can't believe the spring pressure in these things. I swear, I'm going to come up with a bolt-in strut for these cars.

'later...thanks.

I'd think it would be enough weight. I assume you mean with the lower ball joint bolted up and jack up the lower control arm and line up the two inside bolts. No doubt, spring compressors SUCK!

I have done the suspension/frame restoration with the body off and you will need a spring compressor or a very large friend to put enough weight on it to get the springs in. There might be enough weight there if you are using the stock spring rates. I have also done the spring swap at the dirt track trick and also with the help of a couple of large guys you can do it without a compressor.
