That is an interesting test, considering we are yet to see a typical summer day here in S TX this year ;) (lol) The high(s) lately was only in the mid 80's if I recall.

We've been over this issue many, many times on the turbo Buick boards/list since the late 80's/early 90's. Yes, in Phoenix you definitely have cause for concern with a big fm IC that would block ~ the entire rad. With one that doesn't, like say the PTE fm, that might be more workable. I'm sure that Nick M, et al can provide more info from Phoenix. If you want the temp to stay below 195 or so you'll have your work cut out for you either way.

Those of us who have been running big fm IC's (as in the V1 or equivalent) here in S TX for the last ~ 10 years or so have found that yes, it can/does cause temperature issues when the summer heat is on. Those issues can get expensive to address, depending on how much compromise you are willing to accept. Throwing on an aftermarket fan and/or water wetter in the rad just doesn't cut it. We've BTDT ad nauseum...

Unless you're trying to push past say the mid 10's or so then IMO the PTE stock loc IC (or equiv) is the right choice, especially if you live S where temperature is a big issue. It doesn't have the sex appeal of a fm, but it would work better overall on a street car. That last +10 deg from ~ 90 ambient to ~ 100+ ambient can make a big difference in the results...

JMO. As usual, YMMV.

My car runs pretty cool because I've got a good radiator and Ram Chargers dual fans, but when it's 110 outsite and the AC is cranking, it's an entirely different story. All you need to do is sit at a bunch of stoplights or get on it a little out here and you'll see 200 - 205 on the temp gauge no problem. That FMIC is so damn tempting, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up kicking myself come summer......but then again I hate driving my GN in the summer.....aaargg I can't make up my mind.

When you go to the track let us know your times, combo, outside temp, humidity, and altitude. I'm sure we can dig and find something to compare it to.

just got the slicks in and mounted them on some 8inch welds.. will get an ET soon.
took it out to the street races and wooped up on some lightly modded LS1 f bodys with no problems.. felt strong.

now this is going in there with a T-67 and transbrake.
all intercooler pipes are powder coated now .. just waiting to install the new headers and its going in and heading back to the track

Very Nice Work...

I noticed that you removed the front sway bar. Is that necessary to clear the inlet & outlet pipes? Is that required for most FM installs?

i dont use a front sway bar" i manily drag/street race mine, if you bent your pipes diff, the sway bar will clear

Very pretty work. Looks slick and nicely finished.

swapped to the greddy type R bov with the 20 psi spring
and added a 140 amp alt off a buick roadmaster

also added a vaccum block from a mustang thats mounted on the firewall.
My factory metal lines were in bad shape, and decided not to reuse them

I bought the same style intercooler on ebay except I got the larger unit. I'm fabricating the inlet and outlets on the bottom to eliminate all the extra piping.

These pics couldn't have come at a better time. I have the same I/C that I got from a friend that was going to use it for a turbo small block. He gave up and is selling off parts. I was going into the garage tonight to see if it would even fit tonight. I don't see how there is a better bang for the buck out there, especially for the average guy like myself that just likes to work on the car without breaking the bank. This I/C looks as good as any out there and I'm sure it will support any power level I can afford to throw at it. Also can't wait to have the extra working room in front of the engine without the stock location.

Well Done install!
