Fuel Pump relay

I suspect that my current stock fuel pump relay is bad because I'm having a longer delay with the car turning over. I am currently going to install an upgraded fuel pump with a hotwire kit. I believe the hotwire kit has a built in fuel pump relay. My question is do I still have to replace the stock fuel pump relay if I'm installing a hotwire kit. An advice much appreciated. Thanks

First, are we to assume your car is stock? the 86 is known for longer cranking and that was corrected by gm in the 87. The modern aftermarket chips also takes care of that issue. The upgrade is good insurance, but there are other causes for that issue as well. When you turn the key to "on" position, you should hear the f/p run for 2 sec. to pressurize the fuel rail. At which point you should check for proper fuel pressure, 37-39#s. If not, you should trouble shoot to determine the "cause" so as not to introduce more possible problems. I.e. low voltage, fuel filter, bad ground, etc. If everything checks good, then go for it. As far as the relay is concerned, the supplier/manufacturer will state that in the instructions. If you state the intended brand, someone will chime in w/the answer.

If you don't hear the f/p run for the 2 second but the gray wire has voltage for 2 seconds the relay is bad.

^ or the relay has a bad ground, or the wiring from the relay to the pump is bad, or the pump is bad, or the pumps ground is bad, or the relay isn't getting power, or the pump fuse is bad, or the pump is just really quiet.....
