3. Setup the piston rings wrong and bust a ring land? Or is that more of a detonation thing?

Ring gaps tend to close up more than normal in the presence of buttloads of abnormal combustion.

I see. The info I got came from an employee at a well known machine shop in my area. He basically said 'they like to fall apart, in time". Of course he could have been aiming to bring in more money for the business.
