Being bummed about the fact that Purolator stopped making the Pure One for the Biggie oil filter set up, I've been using the Purolater L200033 filter. I stopped in to Napa Auto Parts and cross referenced that filter. They offer the Napa Gold filter, part # 1258, which the guy told me is really a Wix filter. I did the blow test on it and it felt super tight...no leakage. I've noticed that it is ~ 1/2" longer than the L20033 as well.

Anyone have any specs or data on this filter?

Terry

WIX (aka NAPA Gold) filters are very high quality pieces, although generally not as well known as the larger brands.

My engine builder told me that the napa brand was made by WIX but not the exact same thing. I used the gold series on my 6.5 TD. Doesn't really make a big difference I'm sure. Anything made by WIX will be good.

Another lesser known but higher quality filter is the Baldwin brand.

The "biggie" Baldwin is the B9 if memory serves.

i had tried using napa filters but after two golds in a row that didnt hold oil i gave them up. they anti drain back valve didnt work on two in a row! be careful! i just went to my local grease monkey and bought a case of penziol filters, same as the 20033.

I was lead to believe that the Baldwin filters were very high quality but didn't have the anti-drainback. Either that, or I gave one the blow test and it failed...I forget. But if so, they'd be great for those with vertically mounted filters.

Hmmm...re: the Napa Gold failing the anti-drainback. I did several blow tests (No, it doesn't mean anything) on the Napa Gold filter and it couldn't have felt tighter.

maybe i ran into a bad batch, but it matters not since napa closed all the stores in my area anyway. hearing my bearings clatter around scared me too. i got it started and then shut it off and after an hour i took the filter off and there was no oil in it at all. brought the filter back thinking it was just a fluke and got another. put it on, started it up then checked it later and to my surpise same thing, no oil. oh well, just one mans experience.

 The correct cross-reference Baldwin will definitely have an Anti-Drainback Valve.

Out of 8 Baldwin filters I've blow-tested, everyone has had an exceptionally tight ADV.

Cross-refs:

Baldwin # B35-S = Delco PF52 (stock replacement)

Baldwin # B39 = Delco PF24 ("normal" filter for Biggie adapter)

Baldwin # B9 = 20% longer than Delco PF24

The B9 is the largest known filter for the Biggie adapter, AFAIK.

note:
the Purolator L30005 is same size as the Baldwin B9 (ie, 20% bigger than the Delco PF24). The L30005 is realtively hard to find.
I also don't think the L30005 is as ruggedly built as the B9. For exmpl, I can dimple or flex the L30005's metal shell in my hand, whereas I cannot on the B9.
The B9 is rated at 100 psi continuous operating pressure at 250ºF, with a typical burst pressure 200 psi (all per Baldwin tech support).

Thanks tom h, great info. I think I waltzed into a store that carries them, and asked him if they have the ADV and he said no, so I split.

But knowing that, since the Baldwin filters are behind the counter at the AP store I went to, I get to do a blow test in front of him. The right security camera might take a good AFHV clip. "It's okay to appreciate an oil filter, but you don't have to make out with it".

Thanks for the parts # info.

Terry

Excuse the stupid question here, but what is the "blow test"? I think I can picture this pretty easily in my mind :D but how do you do it exactly and does it really indicate anything?

Thx...

Matt, Matt, Matt. The blow test, my friend, is one of the finer diagnostic procedures any upstanding motor enthusiast can perform. Take pride in it, my son, and most of all: don't be shy. Know that you're blowing for a good cause. Encourage your girl the same way.

The blow test is a test to check whether the anti-drainback valve is working well on filters that have it. IOW, many that are so equipt don't really work. One puts their lips up to the center hole of the filter and blows. If any air escapes out of the peripheral holes, then the the ADV isn't working. One should be able to blow on the hole and be able to move NO air.

I've yet to find a Purolator L200033 (for biggie set-up) that leaks. Other brands I've tried definately leaked, and some vary from filter to filter.

Thx for the tips, Terry. Funny how you can work on cars most of a lifetime and not learn these little...err...tricks. Guess I'll be getting to know my oil filters better in the future. ;)

WIX Filters

On the Oil and oil filter boards I followed for some time, Wix filters are reported to filter the smallest particles from your oil of ALL the filters.

Wix makes Carquest premium, and NAPA Gold too. I called the Wix factory. They confirmed that these three filters were EXACTLY the same filters! Just painted a different color and put into different boxes.

Be careful to get the right numbers when you cross reference and buy these filters: They make the same filter With and Without the anti drain back valve, and they have differnent numbers. They look the same, but one has the valve and one does not. A knowledgeble person behind the counter can get the one with a valve in it for you.

Changing oil and filter regularly are prolly more important than which brand you choose.

Lee - Thanks for calling...that's good info. And good to hear about Wix's quality.

I did have the guy at Napa do a cross reference to the Purolator filter part # L200033 and he came up with the Napa Gold #1258. So I would assume it has the ADV. And I did do the blow test, and, as I mentioned before, it couldn't have felt tighter.

I was in Pep Boys and did another blow test on the AC/Delco PF24, and as always...major leakage. Makes me wonder if it has the ADV.

I'm using the Napa Gold's from now on.

you guys are making me nuts im gonna go blow those two new pf52's i got in my xmas stocking :D

Anybody using a Mobil 1 filter? How do they handle the "blow test"? I've had good results with them on other cars, though they cost a mint.

Mobil 1 Filter

If memory serves me, I blew a bitch Mobil 1 filter a couple years ago. Leakification.
