I already posted this in the "parts for sale" section, but I thought that I'd also post it here... I have a good working Garrett 63-1 turbo, compressor A/R .55, with 3 bolt exhaust housing A/R .82 and stock type wastegate actuator that I'd like to sell...I was asking $600 but I'd let it go for $500. + shipping...

thanks,

Claude

Hey Claude,
Please excuse my ignorance, and as this isn't the "for sale" section, I want to ask questions.
How does this turbo compare to a ta49 w/ .63 Precision exhaust housing?
Is this a good fit for a stocker??
thanks

This model was the first turbo that I upgraded to back in 1995. It first came out back in 1994 and, at the time, was the largest 3-bolt turbo you could get. I got mine from Mike at Modern Muscle, who got it from Precision Turbo. (Modern Muscle is now Full Throttle) I ran it down into the low 11's on my old Grey car. Comparing it to a TA-49 is a night and day difference. There is a huge spread in hp capability, almost 100 flywheel hp difference. The TA-49 in the real world is a high 11 capable turbo. That's not to say that no one hasn't pushed it into low 11's or even a rare case of high 10's, but the TE63-1 is a legitimate 10 second capable turbo on a built up combo. The TA-49 is conservatively rated to support 545 flywheel hp at moderate boost levels.

Way back when, The TE63-1 was rated to support 635-640 flywheel hp depending on which turbine housing was used. With this one having a .82 A/R Garrett turbine housing, it would be the later as far as power is concerned. This turbo on a stock bolt on 231, would need a 9" or 9.5" 3500-3600 stall converter to get spooled up quick on the foot brake. The .82 A/R housing requires more stall than either the Garrett .63 or Precision .63 turbine housings. It has a 63mm Inducer compressor wheel and should have a large shaft P-trim turbine wheel. If you only have a 3000-3200 stall converter, you could try a Precision turbine housing swap and it should spool up alot better. If it has a P-trim turbine wheel, you would need a THB3-76 turbine housing from Precision. I still would like to see a 3300-3400 stall converter on this turbo with that PTE .63 housing tho. Good price for a capable turbo if it's in good shape. Good luck with the sale.
Hope some of this helps a little.

Patrick,
Thank you very much for that response. Slowly but surely I am becoming educated.
I also thank everyone else for their patience with my inexperienced inquiries.
