I had the title for the GN transferred a few weeks ago and was shocked when they said it would be $167 ad valorem tax plus $18 title transfer fee. Looks like the ad valorem tax is now a one time fee. Now I'm trying to figure out if this is just another way for the state to get more money since it would take several years to recoup that amount. Are they hoping people will get rid of their vehicle before they start to take advantage of the one time fee? Hypothetically speaking, if a vehicle had a yearly tax of $10.00...then you basically paid 16 years worth of tax all in one shot! Not many people keep a vehicle that long, what is the advantage of this? Even if you keep your vehicle 10 years then get rid of it, you're still losing money you paid in tax. Multiply that by all the people that buy a new vehicle...and the state is making some serious money off this! Am I looking at this wrong? I would like them to get out of my pockets unless they're jerking me off.

I can't tell if it is a fee or an ad valorem tax. Is it based on the value of the car or is it set at $167 no matter what age/value of the car?

It's a tax that the car dealers came up with to regulate guys buying and selling used cars on the side- they pay it when you buy a new car. If you buy a used car now, they base the one time fee on the value of the car. When you buy a tag for a car you already own, they give you the option to pay the one time fee, then $18 a year thereafter. If my GN title hadn't remained in my name with the guy I just bought it back from, it would have been 6.5% of the NADA value. That's about $1400 according to average retail... Wouldn't have been able to buy it.

Wow. so NADA is $21,500 for your GN? then how come the OP only paid $167? NADA on his car must be $2570. You mention they give you an option but I don't understand what the option is? Reason I ask is because I have some relatives in GA. Thanks.

The lady at the tag office said it's ad valorem tax...and when I asked why it's now a one time fee as opposed to the yearly fee it was before...she said she didn't know. So...next year when I renew the registration, I'll only have to pay the $20 tag fee instead of the tag fee plus the ad valorem tax(which would be around $30 total).

Good question...I was hoping someone would know how they get their figure. I certainly hope it's not $167 for all. It wouldn't be fair for an Escort owner to be paying the same tax amount as a Viper owner.

Can't speak for what flem says...not sure about that.

Well, I was sure hoping your GN is worth more than $2500! LOL.

Haha, since I got it legal today, just took my FIRST drive in it since the fuel pump failure and I tell you the damn thing is worth a million dollars right now! I couldn't wipe the cheesy grin off my face. :D :D Still in shock from the tires(255/60s) breaking loose from a roll...

Not sure if the title transfer is less, or how the figure that price. When I got my car back after ten years, the title was still in my name. I went in and said that I just got the car back going and needed to tag it. My county is the only one in GA that charges back taxes(2 years) for non payment on a vehicle out of use. I paid something like $275 including the vanity plate. High retail on an 87 GN is $35k NADA - average is $21.4k... I paid with a smile. I bought my wife a 93 535i wagon before the law took effect- the tag this year was $33. They said I could opt in for $96,and pay $18 from here on, but the decision had to be made on the spot.

Good grief, I thought $167 was bad! So you have "Grand National" listed on the title? Mine says "Regal T-type"...so I'm curious about that having any effect on the tax amount. I have one more vehicle not in use and now you have me wondering if I'd have to pay back taxes if I were to register it. I've had it for about 1.5 years and transferred the title over shortly after I bought it, but haven't tagged it. Already have 3 tagged...you'd think they would offer some sort of a discount over 2 vehicles. Wait, what am I thinking?!?

I still fail to see how this has any benefit? Can anyone with a better grasp on this please explain?

Absolutely zero benefit to me, you or anyone buying and selling cars or bikes. The only beneficiary I see is the dealers, who buy the tags for new owners - who, as I understand, implemented this ugly thing...
