Last nite I swapped the faded glove box door on Old Gray for a mint replacement. In order to maintain the locking feature, I removed the knob & latch assembly from the original glove box door and installed it in the new door. I separated the chrome outer knob from the inner latch with a gentle pry from a flat blade screwdriver. However, I am unable to get the knob to stay installed in the latch upon reassembly. Even with the hardware holding the latch to the door tightened, the knob can still be pulled out from the front. What's the trick to reassembly? None of my manuals offered any help. Has anyone messed with this before?

Hey outpost, I had the same problem as you did. The trick is that you have to put the key in the lock while the lock is in the glove box. Now put the washerall the way into the lock on the inside of the glove box. When the key is in the lock is closes ALL of those little bars so you can slide the washer on. when you pull the key out the last bar pops up and locks the washer in place.
get it? I hope I explained it right.
good luck,
Ralph

WOW, same problem here like a week ago. A weird problem, and the Chiltons was no help. Thank you very much gnfanatic for the heads up!!! I wrecked the paint on my old glovebox door with some citrus cleaner stuff. I left it on when I couldn't get it all apart. Now time for a trip to the boneyard :D
