I read that article by Jack on the Buick engine build. Especially the part of the Speed Pro rings where the first ring gap is the same as the second.

Who buys into this theory and has the directions changed on how to set the gap on the plasma moly file fit rings?
Mine are presently at .018 top and .016 on the second but since it is apart I can change them.

What is gap? It is mainly to keep your rings from butting. I set mine at .022" and .024" on the last motor. They read that on Sealed-Power rings site:rolleyes: New motors use a larger second gap to keep flutter from gases that are between unseating the top ring. There is less heat in the second ring so making it tighter will probably not hurt. My Total-Seals I just set up for this motor are .027" tops and .023" on the second. FWIW factory was .022" and .022". Just don't make them too tight that you tear a ring gland out or pull a piston apart:(

Be a Ring Gland Donor

Jesse,

I happened into an engine builder's shop immediately
after he had torn his ring gland out (too much torque to the twins?)...what a gruesome sight...but due to quick thinking &
duct tape, he pulled through, eventually.

But they weren't able to save the gland.

Won't you sign a Donor Card today?

Owwwww, I hate it when that happens:eek:

Ring gapz??

I'm w/ IC.. I read the article in, I think, Circle track. I called Speed Pro and asked.. He said at the worst, I have some smoke til things got warm.. It did and all's well, so far. Some folks like .004" gap for each inch of bore on N/A engines. Too tite for me>>:D
I use the .006 idea and put up w/ the smoke!!
But it STILL haulzass!!!;) ;)

I just did mine at .020 top .022 - .024 second. 20 over motor JE pistons, speed pro rings. 1/16 1/16 3/16

Guy's,

I'll throw in my $.02 on this one too. I gap both my top and 2nd ring at .025" on a 3.840" bore FWIW. A little extra end gap on the rings won't hurt but not enough sure will.
