I took the GN to the track the other night with my wife and with my son Ike who now owns a nasty black 03 Cobra. It had been almost 2 years since I had the car at the tree so some dusting off of skills as well as getting the GN back into shape was in order.

I got in three runs the best one being a 13.6 @ 102+ with horrible 60 foot times (2.1's and 2.2's) on no/low boost launches. My last run had the makings of a very low 13 or even an ultra high 12 but the boost creeped excessively (up to almost 27psi  ) so I backed out. I still ran a 13.7 at 95mph so it was gonna be a good one. All runs were on pump gas 93 octane and the boost was supposed be at ~18-19 psi. No knock on the first two runs - the third one was a different story but with no damage.

Anyhow, I had a great time, sharpened some rusty skills, and found some weak spots on the car that I'm tuning into shape. Next time out I'll have the race gas in hand. But the most interesting part of the night was watching Ike run his Cobra. Bottom line? Those are wicked cars.

He also got in three amazing runs - his first was a 13.31, the second a 13.18, and the third an awesome 12.91 @110 mph, with horrible 60's on all - 2.1's and 2.2's since he's still learning to launch the beast on the factory stock tires and using a clutch. The only mods to it are a dynomax cat back and a K&N. Definitely a badass car.

Next time out we hope to get some heads up runs in since I'll have the boost cranked up with race gas/chip in place. Should be interesting! I'm hoping for mid 12's if I get the traction and the launch.

Cool. You'd better hope that he doesn't hook when you race him. I ran 12.37 at 110.something mph with a 1.84 60'.......so if he hooks mid 12's prolly won't cut it for ya'. Sounds like everyone had fun........Family day at the track.:)

25+psi on 93 octane? I've been there and done that! (leaky wastegate hose).

25+ boost

Well, the 25+ psi of boost  was certainly an unintentional direction that I had not planned on going! Thankfully, it was only for a second or so because I had my eyes on the gauge as well as the Scanmaster so no damage was done - I lifted immediately.
Scared me pretty good though.

Anyhow, I've got a new hood mount Fuel Pressure gauge I'm going to get mounted tomorrow plus a new battery. I'm also finallizing my turbo/intercooler upgrade choices and they will be going in very soon. And, the next time to the track, it will be with race gas and an intentional 20 - 22 psi if the numbers are good on the SM.

However, I am still in awe of how well the Cobra ran for being essentially stock, on stock tires, and his first time out launching with a stick car. That car is a beast and I know for certain that Ike has not touched the bottom of its potential even for being stock. With a good launch and traction (he had 2.1's and 2.2 60's), he will be mid or even low 12's with no other changes.

Keep your eyes open when you're up against an '03 Cobra - they are not to be taken lightly if your TR isn't a solid low 12 second car. He ran the 12.91 on pump gas - good ol' 93 octane so there's no telling where it's going to end up.

you need to dump in some 112 octane race fuel, turn that boost up to 22-23 psi, throw in a race chip and get a set of sticky slicks and that cobra won't stand a chance...i ran 12.2 @ 112 with all the stock components and it was only my 5th time racing...most new cobra's i am seeing stock are running running MID 12's at BEST with a good driver...no slouches at all but they aren't unbeatable...if they are modded with a set of slicks, underdrive pulley, cold air, and exhaust and chip then they are high 11's capable for sure...

With slicks, pulley, chip, etc...... I plan on plenty more than high 11's!! :D My 12.91 run was a 2.0 60', so I was pretty happy given the track conditions, stock radials, and my first at the track with the car. I was certainly much easier launching my GN!! I'd like to get mid 12's before I buy big mods or slap on stickier tires. We both had a lot of fun, and the bigger mods can't wait much longer. ;) I surely plan to have another GN someday, but this Cobra isn't going anywhere. Gimme 'till late next summer, and high 10's w/ no loss of creature comforts is planned.

Is this like Charlotte's Web? Can you write like your father? If so we may have many volumes to read over the winter to keep our withdrawls down!:D

FORD has had a lot of time to perfect these cars since the last GN rolled off the line.

You really have to hand it to FORD.
Ford kept the ball rolling & never copped out like GM did. Now GM is giving us Australian cars..

I too would rather have the Cobra. :)

While I'm certainly one large chunk off the proverbial block, I doubt I have quite the writing eloquence of my father. Besides..... he has more spare time in his old age ;)
Perhaps I can at least give ideas in order to get him writing about Cobras, instead of Marauders!!:D
