I have a 87 GN that I am in the process of cloning into a GNX. It is a hard top car w/ no body molding. Installed already on the car are: fender vents, flares, wheels, center caps decals, front & rear emblems, instrument cluster, dash plaque and rear seat braces.
It still needs the reproduction suspension and exhaust. I'm not building it to deceive anybody as I tell everyone that asks me if its real that that it is a clone. I can't afford a real GNX so I didn't think there was anything wrong with doing this.
What do you guys think about building a clone of a rare car ?

I think that it is okay, as long as you do not put real GNX number on the dash. I have seen somepeople put 548 or a higher number on it, I think that is ok, or just skip that minor detail.

Shelby Clones have been done for a long time so I say why not. You get the looks of a GNX while getting to actually drive and enjoy it! I'd clone my 86 if I didn't have to sell it! I dont' even have a problem with a dash tag as long as you don't try to sell it as one. THAT IS wrong... Shelby Clones have gone so far as put the shelby tag on the inner fender that say CLONE or NOT REAL. In some cases that's the only way you can tell...

I already have a "GNX 287" dash plaque on the car.....I take the GN to many car shows and it helps to show the people that may never get a chance to see a real one, how one would have came.
I'm not going to sell this car and if something came up where I would have to, I would remove the plaque since this is a hard piece to get.

My theory on cloning is there is nothing wrong with it, as long as the individual does not try to sell the cloned vehicle as the original.

Cloning also allows you to make up-grades without sacrificing originality. A friend of mine cloned a 70 GSX and added options like Stage-1 455, Tremic 5-speed, A/C, and power windows all for a fraction of the price of an original.

It's your car. Do what you want. Anybody who has a problem with it, is just........jealous! ;)

If it were me I'd rather have areal good clone then a real GNX as it'd be like a GNX without the guilt to me, I'd definitely be driving a nice vehicle even if it's rare and special.

I agree with Drac0nic, I don't think I could mod a real GNX and then go to the track and abuse it! I don't have the suspension, dash plaque or grille emblem.
