GNX Flares and new wheel sizes

I have 17x8 and 17x9 torque thrust II's on my stock fendered car now. I need to buy new tires before long and was considering the flares but wasn't sure how wide of a tire and wheel you could use to fill out to the lip of the flare. I know the GNX I used to own's tires didn't even seem to fill it up. I don't want them hanging out but I would like as much meat under the rear as it will hold short of looking tacky. I'm sure someone else has done this and will have some pictures/ suggestions. Thanks,
