Put a new coil pack on last night. When I lifted up the old one there was goo sticking to the some of the wires. The whole top of the module seems to be goo. I take it this is a good indicator of overheated module. Car runs fine.

Yup,sounds like.If the car starts to run like crud again soon, you'll know what's wrong[ignition related].

The goo inside of the ignition is some kind of dielectric material to protect the ignition module, heat from the engine make its gooey or soft and sticky, when it cool down its should hard, it also depends if its the original module in there. I bought a new one for my car and the new one seen not a bad. But if you see lots of bubbles inside the goo then you might have a problem with you ignition modulel, but then again your car will be running like crap or won't even run with a bad module.
