This was the buildup I used on my motor that just came out of the shop and now has a wiped cam. The machine shop called Jack up about a couple of questions he had. Jacked called him back on his own dime and they talked for a while, seems to be a great guy.

I dont think the wiped cam has anything to do with the engine work. Im hoping to get better results on the second cam. :)

I've been following that 3 part article in GM High Tech magazine myself I found a particular line by Jack pretty amusing. Think he said words to the effect "I seen no one was taking care of or servicing (building motors) for the needs of the 11 and 10 second cars". Almost sounds like no one in the NJ/NY metropolitan area had a 11 or 10 second car until this point.

Now having been a former poster boy for Rons ad's for many years I know that Jack has been doing motors for Ron for I believe a little over two years. I know Ron had asked my motor guy to do some motors for him before he hooked up with Jack Merkel but my guy declined as he was too busy.

I have never had a motor done by Jack Merkel and after my own motor debacle in 1998 and the conversations we had while I was changing HG's up there I chose another route with my car and motor.

I am not saying Jack doesnt know his trade as he has done a ton of work on Fords and Olds as his shop was right across the street from where I work. Point is pick an engine builder that you are comfortable with and get the best bang for your buck.

However keep in mind no engine builder that I know of can or will warranty a race motor as there are too many variables that they have no control over. They dont know how much boost you run, octane, fuel system etc.

Take the article for what its worth and alot that was in there info wise has been out there for many years and not anything thats new. However and I am sure it has and will be debated back and forth the clearances that Jack/Ron/Red use on their motors differ from what others have used. But hey Rons car is going low 10's and will be in the 9's soon so that one was built right I'd say.

My question on the part 3 of his article is how can he say "just reuse the old push rods if they are not bent..." The rebuild has a new cam and lifters and fresh milled surfaces on the heads and block. I would think checking lifter preload and proper push rod length and new push rods would be in order after spending all that money. I hope it was just a misprint or oversight:eek:

I thought red built ron's motor, not jack? could be wrong as I haven't been up to rons in a while but I know red had been gathering parts and building the engine for a couple of years. maybe red shipped all the parts to ron and jack assembled, who knows?

you are right Rich, 9's are probably just round the corner. with the 10.10 coming after only a few tuning runs, 9's should not be too far away.

someone at the nats told me that ron's car had trouble on the last run, anyone got any info?

I spoke to Paul Ron's son the last run he blew a headgasket. Also guy's keep in mind Ron is running a stage 2 worked.

You are correct in your thinking. If the heads and block have been milled to make flat and correct your stock push rods will then be to long unless you get new ones or shim up the rocker shaft.

If this is not done you will bend some push rods and cause rocker bind and possible cause some other damage :(

I would think this was an oversight in the article.

LOL but I don't build motors for a living, just a hobby :)

Take Care

ron might not want his combo pulic. i've seen a few people ask about his build up on many lists and "mums" been the word.

I doubt it's a typo in the article. most people when they are published read and re-read the article many times to make sure it's correct. if this was a typo I'm sure it would have been caught. getting published is a big deal especially when the article effects your business.

I know when we use to build Chevy's we use to reuse push rods all the time as long as they rolled straight across a pane of glass. on our old Chevy race car we naturally used new push rods. I'm sure ron used new push rods in his stage motor.

.

How about thier LT1 Build-Up (Lost 2 tenths!!)

Man thier Really Flyin!

Who's LT-1 build up? I usually skip the Chevy build-up's and only read the Buick parts.

I wonder why ron had reds build his motor when he claims he has the best builder in the land as his partner:confused: Something fishy in NJ...

Because he got tired of all the other NJ boys being faster than him??

Beyond that, I doubt that Jack M, or too many other guys, have built a Stage engine. If you wanted to get it right the first time, Red, or similar, would probably be a logical choice. :)

anyone pay attention to the white ttype in the first article?

if im not mistaken that car has a 455 in it..

i looked at the car in bg. cause it looks just like mine (hotair) and it had 455 emblems under the ttype emblems on the fenders.

if you click on the picture it'll blow up and it looks like the same one.

:D
