Hi guys...I'm looking for a good trans shop in Maryland. My trans needs to be rebuilt soon, and I'd like to find someone who has worked on TR's before. Any suggestions?? TIA!

Where in MD are you? DelTrans is in Newark, DE, close if you are north of the river. Rob at NRH Transmisions in Jessup owns a GN and has built a couple of trannies for local racers that seem to be doing just fine so far (plus a good warranty and free towing). His # is (301)617-2500. Andy Lehoskay builds them on the side for lots of us, down in Waldorf. I had DelTrans do mine at 205,000 miles and it lasted 3 years and about 30,000 miles then the converter clutch came apart, clogged the filter, and starved every bearing for oil. They admitted that they had had a problem with clutch material and redid the converter (it was a stock D5 that they rebuilt and restalled to 2800) for half price, but they wanted full price to do the trans over again. I went to Andy, and now have 35,000 miles on his and it shifts about the same as the day I picked it up. Rob's closer, so way in the distant future (:-)) when I need it, I'll probably go to him.

Thanks Carl. I'm in Greenbelt. I've met you a few times- I have the WE4 with the tags that say "EFFNQWK". I have seen you at Capitol and at that swap meet at Covington Buick a while back. NRH did the trans in Aaron's car right? Now...another question. Is it better/wiser for me to just buy a trans outright, or fix what needs to be fixed/beefed up on mine? The problem right now is that it's just not catching like it used to. No wheelspin at the top of first, and no barking 2nd gear. I looked into it, and found that the previous owner had the TV cable cranked to tighten the trans when I bought the car. Now, the cable is stretched and I think I need new parts in my trans to start getting the power to the ground again. I don't know that much about our transmissions, so I need all the advice I can get. TIA,
Derek:D

P.S. How do I get ahold of Andy?
You can e-mail me his # or just post here.

Duh, sorry, Derek, I should have remembered you. I just don't get the whole "hide my identity behind a screen name" thing (and I have enough trouble remembering one name for someone, much less two) so I look for real names in the message and ignore the rest. Yes, Rob did Aaron's latest trans, and if anyone can kill it in short order he will. So far it's great. Shifts nicely at just the rpm Aaron wanted. Rob was at the club meeting last Tuesday; come up next month if you haven't already talked with him. For the last several years Andy was about the only one the fast guys around here trusted, but he's more focused on other hobbies these days so it was good luck for us that Rob opened up.

Thanks, Carl. I'll probably be giving Rob a call soon. Now, should I be looking for a totally new unit, or should I just overhaul the one I have? I'm guessing that a new trans will run me about $1400 or so for a decent street/strip combo. What does a rebuild run on average? I realize that this is a very broad question, and it obviously will depend on the rest of my tranny parts condition, but I'm pretty much in the dark on this one....

Easiest is to rebuild yours, unless you already have a brf core laying around. A stock rebuild with some basic improvements is $800-1000, next step up about $1200, and fully built maybe $1400-1500. Then add the converter.
