So as of now, if a person wanted or had to do a conversion what is the consensus on what gas to convert to?

According to the chart RB-276 and freeze-12 are almost the same....

.

Don't know about a consensus but here's my view: If you do your own work maybe pick up a cylinder (lifetime supply :-)) of RB276 (I'm just afraid that finding a shop, especially on a trip if something goes wrong, that knows RB276, will be pretty tough). Otherwise I'd recommend just going to R134a since that's what every shop you go to will understand and have for several years to come. Basically swap some cooling power for maximum conveniece. When it gets scarce you should be able to go to the new HFO1234y just by sucking out the R134 and putting in the new stuff, but you might as well wait until all the shops get used to it and have it on hand.

I'm not sure if you have been following everything on RB276 but I will mention it again, RB276 is a complete drop in replacement for 134a and Nothing else is needed. Therefore if you are on a trip and anything happens GO BACK WITH 134a !!!! It won't hurt a thing...

Now if they are out of 134a and can't get it now your in that boat!

SW.

so i take it that the patent on 134 ran out...

Exactally. Duponts patten runs out soon. So they are coming out with a "safer and better freon"...........isn't it magic how they discover this now at the end/of their control?

What difference does it make? They are taking the fittings off the systems anyway so we can't work on our own AC. Go look at your newest car - see if there is a fitting on the low side. :(

Not that I'm proud of the fact I'm driving a Honda (at least it's American made), but it has fittings on both sides.

I wonder where they make the Chevy's these days- lol

My friend just looked at his 2004, I think, Chevy truck...no low side fitting.

Wondering when they will make the entire engine/trans a sealed system. Feels like Cuba is coming our way - where it is illegal for owners to work on their own cars.

You mean somewhat "assembled" in the US? I don't think we manufacture much of jack anymore. Anyone seen new US weapons? Do they say made in China? :D

Well, no. I mean fully produced in the U.S. In order to qualify as such it has to be made of at least 80% U.S. made components, and built here (Ohio). The engine and tranny are even produced here. But this is off topic so let's get back on point.

The gm truck have both fittings. they are five inches apart from each other. There is one on both sides of the orfice tube. Why they did this I dont know. the pressures are not normal . I had one with 225 on the high side and 125 on the low side and it was blowing ice cubes:confused:. evac and recharged 3 times and the same all three times. My friends buddy worked for dupont when they got rid of r-12. Him and a bunch of other workers got laid off 6 months before retirement:confused:
