just got a new goodmark gas tank, it is not painted and does not appear to have a coating on it. does anybody know what they are made of and if i have to paint it?

I put an aftermarket in salvageV6 back in 96 or so.
I think it was galvanized steel. Not sure.
At any rate coated or not I first used two cans of metal primer on it, Rustoleum brand. As many coats as you can get.
Then I overcoated it with rustoleum paint, one can.
Then I put the black tar spray stuff on it, one cans worth.
No leaks yet. Not hard to do and worth the peace of mind.
Do extra layers where the straps go as that's where two stock tanks I have had in my two cars leaked.

and i would like to leave it bare if possible and have the tank straps chromed. i don't have wipers so i won't drive it in the rain.
