so i just picked up a rough 84 t-type, it needs a lot of help! i put new plugs and wires on it, and did an oil change. after letting it run a little, it is now running rough, and when i give it gas the engine tries to die. the car has a lot of blow back out of the valve cover/oil filler tube (no gasket left at all), but it is also blowing smoke out around the turbo, especially if i rev the engine. the engine idles good aside from the smoke, has a little lifter noise from sitting so long (has been sitting since 1999 supposedly). i go to move the car and of course it keeps dieing. i am new to these vehicles, as everything i have ever worked on has been older and carberated. i'm just trying to get it running decent. i am afraid i will end up doing a complete overhaul, but hopeful it may be a lot of little things wrong making the big picture look bad. i am figuring i probably need to replace the turbo, anyone have a good used one laying around cheap? i would just like to get the car running good, in stock condition for now. eventually i will upgrade/mod it a little, but for now i just need it to run correctly! lol. thanks for any help. -Josh

also forgot to mention, THE CAR IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO START. it cranks over forever being finally starting. once the car has ran some, on restart it is not as difficult, but still cranks over many times before fiiring :frown:

How old is the gas in it? id add some no lead racing gas to offset whatever is in the tank and run it thru it may help...Also change your fuel filter and check your fuel pressure...

ok... a WHOLE bunch of stuff happened on that start up...

1. Did you prime the motor before starting it? there was most likely NO oil in the turbo at start-up, since it has been sitting...
2. all sensors go bad over time... the go bad MUCH faster when sitting for long periods of time... crank and cam sensor are real common on these cars.
3. purge the fuel rail? tirn on the ignition, and press the valve on the fuel rail that looks like a tire valve...get that nasty crap out of the lines as best you can.
4. ADD FUEL INJECTOR cleaner to tank
5. another oil change WILL be necessary for a rough start-up.
6. oil out of the turbo means a wiped out center bearing, most likely from sitting, the seal cracked.
7-it is probably running rouch becuase it is dumping oil into the intake from the turbo with the bad seal... check a couple of those new plugs and see if they are black already.

here is a good one:
8 READ SPRING CLEANING GUIDE on the gnttype.org forum. it may have a link in the basic hot air sticky in this forum, but if you go to GNTTYPE.org, you will be set with TONS of info to get you going...

I firmly believe that turbo is wiped out, and in turn, it is fouling your plugs, causing the rough idle, hard start and so on.

Good luck and welcome!!!!

when i got my car- in fact the reason i got my car- it had a blown head gasket. it was blown out between two cylinders and into the intake valley. it ran well enough on 4 cylinders to move around under it's own power. it had lots of smoke coming out of the breather in the valve cover just like yours does, and also smoked out the exhaust pretty heavily, too.
turns out that whoever put together the engine (it was a parts store replacement engine in the early 90's) didn't bother to torque the head bolts down- i spun a few of them out with my fingers and broke the rest loose with my small 3/8" ratchet.
run a compression test to see if you've got 1 or more dead cylinders.
my car was a simple fix- i bought a pair of head gaskets, intake gasket set, and exhaust manifold gaskets and got it running over the weekend. it only cost me about $100 for parts and 10 hours of labor to get it running, and i figured that if it didn't work i'd either build a better V6 for it or put a small block in it.

Welcome and feel free to ask about anything:cool:

Add a bottle of marvel Mystery oil in the engine oil to help free up lifters (half bottle) the rest add to your fuel.

Fuel filter might be clogged replace it.
If your turbo seal is bad a rebuild wouldn't cost that much, hell for few extra hundred you can get yourself a TA33 turbo. For now post on the wanted section Desire stock hotair turbo.

I believe the your cam sensor/maf might be bad, might not be letting the injetors piss right.

Was it running find before wires/plugs???? Not saying you did but a wire or two can be mixed.

phvrod

Theres a TA33C for sale right now ..........Hot air section........
