only bad part is that there has to be line of sight betweek that thing and the GPS satellite. so if they steal your car at 2 am when you are sleeping, then you don't realize till 6 am when you get ready to take your car to work. so you go to check the website for your car's location and it is probably already sitting in a garage being torn apart. so no tracking for you. but it is still a GREAT idea. just don't know how well it would work.

Lo-Jack

How does that compare to Lo-Jack? Can they track your car if it in a building with Lo-Jack?

i have no clue how lo-jack works, i just know how GPS works. and when you go through a big tunnel in your car with GPS the GPS doesnt work

Gps

That might suck since I'm guessing most chop shops are large where house that probably wouldn't get a good signal. I though Lo-Jack was a radio frequency that they have to triangulate with three satellite so it can take longer to locate and it's not as accurate. I could be wrong. Looks like I've got some research to do before I get my car back on the road. :D

Did you guys ever see a repo truck with a bunch of antennas on the roof real close to getter or even a cop car? Well thats the low jack antennas that system actually works pretty well if they don't know how to disable it....the low jack box it self looks weird but I will not post pictures of one as to attempt to keep them the least known as possible ;) but with that being said the system has its ups and downs just like anything else but I can tell you we have 8 cars with the system on there :)

does lo-jack have any way of notifiying you and/or the police if you car is taken or do you have to alert the police. i think you get a key fob or something, you hit the button and it alerts the police, right? not sure

not sure i do know lo-jack has an early warning system which alerts you if your car has been moved and if i'm right they can also disable it

It does appear to be a good assist to law enforcement to locate your car once it has been stolen, but considering you don't know how many packets you will need, it could become pricey. There could and probably would be a time delay between when you ordered extra packets for data transmission in the event there bacame a hot pursuit" and the vehicle was either stolen, or being stolen. Does look like it has possible potential, though. The value of this system is going to be solely dependent upon the response you get from whatever law enforcement agency you contact to report a stolen vehicle, and how responsive they are to this system.

viper gps is better. if your car is moved you get a call. it has a mecury switch in it

Thats what I have-its an awesome system(the best when tied into their alarm)

You want something like the viper GPS. Something that will call you when the car is moved. Then you can track it and find it before it's in some garage or torn apart.

Lo-jack is junk IMO. First off the thing when turned on in the police car makes all kinda noise because it picks up false signals all the time. so what do you think a cop who is stuck in a car is gonna do.. turn it off! The only way lo-jack can help is if the car was just stolen. Any lo-jack requests police get that are over 12 hours old they usually ignore. So the officer has to have it on and it really can't track to a pinpoint like GPS. Lo-jack will get you in the area but still hard to find. I know a ton of cops and the first thing they do when they get in a car equipped with lo-jack is turn it off!

It's your car and getting it back would mean more to you then some cop who could care less about a car that is 20 years old! Unless the cop is a GN owner.

As we4jim so eloquently put it, there are ups and downs to every system. Lo-jack is ground based (terrestrial), and works very well in major metropolitan areas, especially if the PDs have both air units and ground units to coordinate the location activities. The signal does penetrate walls and garages, but is subject to the laws of electromagnetics- if a vehicle is in a shielded room, then the signal output is voided. Each unit transmits a unique ID code when activated, and is independent of the vehicle's battery system.

The ideal system would combine terrestrial tracking with a GPS location unit, as well as an alarm for signaling when the vehicle is moved. Seems that this unit might have it all:Mobile Guardian

And, no, I don't rep for either company.
