GS Nationals/TR events and 2 way radios

Hey why can't we use 2 way radios - walkie talkies ( like little radios about $40 - $80 for a pair - motorola) at GS Nationals and other events to communicate with others, for example at GS Nationals we could use a channel just for groups and other channels for special news.

They usually work good fo 2 mile area.

Just wondering, worked great when deer hunting!!

looking for ideas and comments or suggestions.

We have been using "real" 2 way radios at the Nats since the 80s. My buddy has his own 2 way radio system, repeater, and tower in Nashville. So every year we'd carry our portables around BG with us on a "talk-around" channel. We would be outta range to talk to people in Nashville but we could always call the repeater thru a pad on the portable and go thru their. Then he's got them mounted in all his vechicles including his T-Rs with the little chrome antennas drilled thru the center of the trunk. People use to think we was cops around there in the early '90s cause no-one had radios like we was using back then but the police. We have to use call #s on this system also as it's regulated by the FCC.

Now-a-days I see lots of people carrying these Wal-Mart specials around that you are speaking of. I highly recomend it.

Matter of fact I believe the Michigan and Chicagoland Chapters use them.

That sounds like a really good idea. Have a set 'frequency' or channel that all can listen to for information or what have you. Perhaps a tb.com chan. Etc. I plan on picking one of these things up for a few events I am working on.

They're great.

Should'nt be without them. I go with a friend every year. We tried cell phones once but they sucked. Couldn't hook up. It was very frustrating. Asked for and got the frs radios for Christmas the next year to keep track of the wife during Nascar. We use them for everything. Took them to the nats. They're the best! Do it.

A lot of the Chicagoland chapter members carry them and use a certain channel. We recommend getting the ones with sub-channels on them, otherwise we can't hear you transmit.

Some of them can carry from hotel to hotel!

I know Nextel phones work really well at the events also, but for the money, these two way radios really can't be beat.

Naw, it's my buddies system, I just use it when i'm hanging out with them. He has a company and has these radios in ALL their company trucks and personal vechicles including their turbo Buicks with the antennas drilled into the center of the trunk.

Best way I know how to describe it is it's a identical system to what the police use. The mics on the mounted vehicle units and the portables have key pads where you can use it like a cell phone and call out or you can call the repeater when you are so far out of the area. He was in Destin Fla several years ago and was on the radio and his employees was scratching their heads wondering how he was getting out that far. He just called the repeater and went thru their, at least that's what he told me. I don't honestly know much about how the system works I just know enough of how to use it to get by.

I do know that every so many minutes the repeater has to identify itself and sorta sounds like morse-code. He has THP frequency (TN Highway Patrol), the local ambulance and hospitals and USE to have Metro Police (Nashville) till they went to some new kinda digital system that scanners won't even pick-up.

I know that HAM radios have these big call numbers abyz1234 (something like that) and has special tags on their cars. He just uses regular numbers and no special tags is the best way I know how to describe it. Like his number is 33, JDs is 79, etc.

It's a pretty neat system all together.

ok, sounds like they use business band frequencies. the FCC mandates that the repeaters have to i.d. themselves every so often,thus the morse code,or "cw".the new walkie-t's that every seems to use now are FRS radios,which are open for anyone to use.
ham operators with the ham radio license plates have to apply for those plates like any other type of custom plate.
i am a ham and would never cut a hole in my GN's trunk for an antenna mount.thats just nuts. i'm getting ready to put a radio in my car and will use a lip-mount type mount on my trunk.

Well, of the 5 T-Rs 2 of them he has takin the radios out and had the holes filled when the cars was painted and you CAN'T even tell the antenna was there. It wasn't those BIG ones it was those that are bout like 3-4 inches tall. He had them mounted DEAD center of the trunk, right on the seam to.
