Just received my latest issue yesterday and was reading about the oil article
that was in this issue and I could not find where it mentioned what oils that we should be using in our cars and the older ones as well, because of the decline of ZDDP in the newer oils, what I gathered from this was to use what ever oil you like and add a bottle of our ZDDPlus. Was this a sales pitch for this product?? Valvoline VR1 10-30 or 20-50 have adequate amounts of ZDDP
in these oils that we could be using in our cars with out having to buy or adding a additive, just for you info check out there web site, since I'm in the lube business oil's are my business and I do a lot of research on oils, now I'm
not an engineer but I do beleive I do have a grasp on the oils that are out there today and what is happening to the oils ccause of our friendly EPA
cutting out all the good additives our cars need because of the catalytic
converters being poisioned by the additives, the newer cars with the roller cams do not need these additives like our cars and older ones as well, even the diesel oils will continue to use smaller amounts as time passes and all we will have is that BS crap CJ-4 oil. Just ranting and putting my 2 cents worth in

GSXTRA is an (infomercia)l "newsletter" (infomercial) sent out by the GSCA owner.

Never to be confused with any objective journalism, or burdened by any scientific testing w/viable conclusions and never free of blatant favoritism.

You readily recognized the marketing product plug in the article for what it is.

Too bad if even one person falls for it.

I seemed to have run out of room talking about oils and their additve packages, there is Schaeffer's oil, Alisyn oil, very expensive if not the most expensive oil sold here in the states, Alisyn I was referring to as being the most expensive, there could be others but I'm not aware of them, I do not know if Shell Helix is sold in the states or not, which is way expensive. But the two mentioned oils can be used with out problems, could be others but
that is what I'm familiar with and know about, let the discussion began!

Definititon of Adequate ZDDP

Ron, in your first post, you mention that the current genre of engine motor oils have an adequate amount of ZDDP. I have not found this to be true for classic / muscle cars... such as GNs. I submitted several popular modern engine oils to independent labs for testing and the results were exactly as expected -- little to no ZDDP. These modern API rated motor oils are fine for new cars.. and that is their primary market. I would suspect that if you're running a stock GN, with solid tappets, that you would want more ZDDP in your oil, much more. Exactly how much more depends on many variables (time between oil changes, driving conditions, temperature, etc.)... but it is certainly safer to err on the high side -- particularily since you don't have a cat converter to worry about.

No disrespect towards anybody, but after reading and re-reading the 8 page thread or so on ZDDP, I am going to do exactly that, but with GM EOS until I run out of it, and then I am planning on doing the very same thing with ZDDP. Maybe even after I switch over to rollers, as there were some very interesting thoughts that ZDDP might help other parts of the motor also.
Just because a product is expensive does not make it a quality product.
And just because a product is inexpensive does not make it a non-quality product. And race oils that do contain a sufficient amount of ZDDP are generally not recommended for the street due to minimal amounts of detergent, if any. Never willl there be a time when everybody agrees on the same brand of oil, or weight, for that matter. Currently I am using Mobil1 & 1 or 2 bottles of GM EOS. And fwiw, I do not believe in oil or gas additives.

Dna, either you mis thought what I wrote talking about today's modern oils , they DO NOT have a sufficient amount ZDDP because of the EPA was wanting converters to last longer and not become poisoined from these additives, so you can buy or spend your money on the ZDDP or there are other oils out there like the Valvoline VR1 oils, they are made for street use as well as the track and are alcohol compatible and have ZDDP in that particular oil and is not expensive, but as always the choice and money is yours to spend as you see fit.
