gutted cat without internal pipe

I was reading thru the forum and saw a post that mentioned that a gutted cat should have a pipe put inside it. Is this really the case?

I have a 2.75" dp with a gutted cat without any type of pipe. would I benefit from doing this mod? Also how far will the 2.75" dp take me? Is this going to be enought with a PT53 turbo and 9" 3400 convert? I think I heard someone say that a certain size dp is good up to so much horsepower (cant remember the numbers but it was like 500hp for the 2.75)

I run a THDP 3" and a g????? cat through full exhaust at 11.2 @ 121 MPH @ 19 lbs boost. I would say a pipe through the cat would be more efficient but gains in Et and MPH, don't know about that?
