Im possably going to be purchasing in the near future an 87 GN. Im new to these cars and im not sure what to be looking for. Im going to be looking at one tomorrow with 128K on the car, Its supposed to be real clean inside and out the asking price is 8900.00 is that to much and should I be looking at a car w/ that many miles?? what are the weak points with these cars??

Thanks

I would definately check out the info over at http://www.gnttype.org there's a whole guide on what to look for when buying one of these cars. In addition, if you can, take a peek under the rear seat and the carpet where you can. Me and another friend both had water leaks that were hidden until we pulled up the back seat. Or looked under the carpeting. Welcome, and Good Luck.

The price sounds a bit high for that many miles. If its got exceptional paint and interior and still runs strong than the miles arent a big issue.Make sure the tranny shifts nice and firm.If it hesitates before going into gear youre gonna have some tranny issues before long. Also look underneath the doors for rust. For that price it should be nearly imacculate in and out.Good Luck.

Run a Carfax on it. I just looked at a GN for a friend with 18,000 miles on it. Very clean car so I gave him the go ahead to buy it. He ran a carfax and it came up with a salvage certificate at only 1800 miles. Needless to say he didn't buy it.

Price is high. My friend (same person from above) just bought an 86 T with 54000 on it for $6500. Very clean car. Had been painted in some spots but saw no sign of any body filler or any accidents.

Take your time and do your homework and you should be able to find a real clean car for a great price, especially with the way the economy is.

Post where you are, many guys here are willing to help you inspect.

You really should look at it with someone who own(s)ed one as you can get burned pretty bad unless you know what your looking at. Maybe someone on this board who's local can help you out?? I would, but i'm just a tad to far from ya. Good luck, and WECOME TO THE DARKSIDE.

One thing I would defenetily look at is the tranny. If it's been rebuilt there's a big possibility it might have been done by someone not familiar enough with these trannys. Mine was rebuilt and I didn't know too much about these cars when I bought mine. Turned out that the rebuilt wasn't done too well and the worst thing was that the converter had been changed to a regular 200 4 R converter. Needles to say that now I'm looking for a new one because of the terrible turbo lag this way too low stall speed converter causes. If you can, pull the cover and check that the converter has D5 stamped all over it. Good luck with your search!
