I have a DIY system that I'm running and can't seem to make any progress in the timing/knock department.

The details of the set up are:
100 PSI pump/1.4 GPM
Accumulator to even out pump pulsing and keep pressure up
60/40 water to denatured ratio
single 1080cc nozzle(very fine mist) about 8 inches away from TB
injection point is set to ~13 psi (confirmed it is working)

The car pulls pretty hard , but starts to break up around 5K to redline. The external wastgate is open and sounds very muffled. The boost is set 19PSI . My timing numbers are ~10 to 12 degrees at WOT. spark plugs are gapped to .025(stock is .044). I have run this spark gap on the car before and had good results on the dyno. With the car set to 18psi, and no alk/h2o, the car pulls ALOT harder and no breaking up. The wastegate is way louder too. Timing is 14-16.5.

I started wiht just water, them went to 90/10mixture, then to my current 60/40 mixture.

Anyone have a idea what could be wrong.

Thanks,

-Jon

It's probabbly the gap that is messing you up. Too small a gap= flooding. Pump gas and alchy need fire to ignite. If a .035 gap doesn't work, then you should check the quality of spark being generated. Pull a wire at the coil (yes at the coil) and watch the spark jump 2-3 inches to the one of the 6 coil mounting screws (the torex ones). Should make the jump, and have a nice blue color.

Sounds like a first rate system. You have the right idea with the high pump pressure, and small nozzle.

Accumulator

May I ask where and how much did you buy the accumulator and where did you buy them.

Do you know how much psi the accumulator can store and did you also get a pressure switch to activate the pump to keep the accumulator chraged up when it drops below the rated value ?

Thanks

turbo_tim

I reset the ECU and am getting better timing so that's good, but not where I think it should be. I ran a .30 gap and had the same stuttering effect. I'll try a bigger gap. I'm getting 18-22 degrees now .

M2turboca

I made my accumulator. (I work at a race fabrication shop, Piper Motorsport). It holds ~ 20 onces and is made of aluminium with a inlet and outlet fittings. I'll try this week to get some pics up of my system. I don't have a pressure switch on the accumulator, but you can hear that the pump only cycles about half the time(as opposed to a continous pumping) when the whole system is activated. The pulses coming out of the nozzle are almost no existant(very steady stream).

18-22 degrees of what, knock retard?

If youre only running 14-16.5 degrees of timing you do not have enough. I would run about 22 degrees, that will cause your car to flood out also.

Do you have a scan tool?

Yes, as Bob has asked do you have a scan tool? You can't make serious power without one. Nopt safely anyway.

Find the article on spark plug gaps in the tech section. Since the link is incomplete (?) you need to know the article was written on 9-9-02.
