I am trying to put the harmonic balancer on my 87 GN and I am running into a issue. The bolt that I have for it threads in just fine but the washer that came with the car (bought it with the engine torn down) wont go into the harmonic balancer it goes onto the lip where the bolt goes through not into the harmonic balancer like you would think it would. Is this right? And are these washers different between the 4.1 blocks and the 3.8 blocks thanks!

anyone? this is keeping me from getting the car together, I am sure someone here has had the engine down this far and can remember how the washer for the harmonic balancer went on it.

Where is the washer hiting the lip where the pulley sits on????The washer is supposed to sit on the lip inside the balancer, if it doesn't the balancer would fall off!

the opening where the bolt goes and threads into the crankshaft, the washer on the bolt hits the lip around the hole, but the balancer goes in a bit further past the lip, you would think the washer would rest inside beyond the lip, but instead it looks like it rest on the lip

If you tighten the bolt, does the balancer move in and out still? does it seem loose?

THAT IS THE WRONG WASHER!

ITS SUPPOSED TO SIT INSIDE! LIKE YOU THINK

thought so, so where can I pick up one? would any washer of the same thickness work? as long as it fits over the bolt and in the balancer? also could my bolt be wrong too?

post a pic of the bolt, i would use the proper washer, go to a wrecker, or try gm

Damper bolt washer

Hi,
The damper bolt washer rides on the OD of the damper itself. If you can install the crank pulley with it attached, then you are good to go. I just had one of these apart, took a while to think about it, but I'm sure this is how it was. Don't shop for washers and F*** your engine up! By the way, a little silicone in the keyway prevents leaks, and torque to at least 200lb-ft.

looked for it but I cant seem to locate one. Any other thoughts on who may sell on? I am close to a stock one but am waiting to hear back from someone.

Go to the junkyard and get one off of a NA 3.8, I think they might be the same. Worth a try anyway, right?

ok, I got the specs on the washer and the bolt, so say if I went to a hardware store and got a washer and bolt of the same specs (or even used my existing bolt) would that work? I also have the part number incase I must got through the dealer. Let me know! I wanna finish putting my engine back together!
