Has anyone put a lightning rod shifter in a GN?

I was thinking about doing it. I dont really know why, maybe it would be good for drag racing but would also just look cool. I was wondering if anyone has done this before.

I did it to my GN. I loved them, the coolest thing about the car to me.

All you need is the correct cable and shifter, you can modify or make everything else.

I have a set with everything needed to install including a custom cover plate by Mark Huffman. I've just never gotten around to it. Maybe I will now. Here is a picture I have saved..

I had it listed for sale before, but I think people thought I was crazy when I listed everything for 800 but that was only 100 more than I had in the thing and it took me some time rounding up all the parts ect. A part of me doesn't want to have to cut up the stock console, but it would be different.

I didnt see it up for sale. I have been kicking this idea around almost as long as I have had my GN. If you had it for sale last winter I most likely would have bought it for 800 without a problem.

I believe you put the main one in drive, the 1 and 2 get locked either up or down, then as you hit the rpm you want to shift at you smack the 1 and 2 rods up or down, respectively. It's just a little fancier/beefier method to do what the stock shifter will do.

I just put them in mine in Feb. Totally easy swap. The only hard part is rounding up all the brackets, as mentioned earlier. Anyone try to find a floor shift trans bracket in a junkyard lately? Not as easy as it once was. Only thing I have left to do is the top plate.

Oh.. and it is a total gimmick but you will probably like answering questions about them and fooling around with them on the street. They are NOT for drag racing.
All that said, I love mine too.

I've got Lightning Rods in my GN... in the trunk

I agree, they are not for drag racing but I raced with the car in drive anyway.

I made the trans tunnel mount bracket out of aluminum. You'll need to make a backup plate for the rubber gate seal and then the top plate which I had the fellow in Utah (name is escaping me) make. You don't have to cut too much from the console but it is irreversible. You also have to destroy the chrome top plate (thing under the gray trim piece that surrounds the stock shifter).

You can shorten the stock tranny pan mount (.95") and the rest is a detail chasing job. That pict above looks just about identical to mine except I had the turbo 6 put on mine and my rubber seal is a smooth (not ribbed) one.

They're cool, do it. My old car is somewhere up in Canada now. Sold it to a guy in Brampton (Toronto).
