My plan for the spring is to address my poor sagging headliner. I'm tired of not being able to see out of half my rear window and cleaning all the little pieces of foam out of the interior. My problem is that my GN has a dealer installed ASC sunroof. Not a factory astroroof. I haven't pulled dowd what's left of my headliner yet to see what they did yet but it certainly feels like the origional headlined board was just cet in half just behind the roof opening. I really don't like the way it was done. I have no clue what is holding the liner up in the front half of the car. It feels like they just secured it around the perimeter of the sunroof and the car. My plan is to get a headliner board out of a hard roof car and cut just the sunroof opening out of it. Then building the edges of the opening up with fiberglass to meet the height at the end of the sunroof. Then recovering it as if it were a standard hard top car with a hole in the center for the sunroof. Is anyone familiar with how the dealer did the installs on these roofs? Have any ideas on other options for me?

Headliner issues

I don't know if this will help, but I ran into a similiar problem with an 82 SC I restored a couple of years ago. (factory astro roof car) The factory made the headliner 'board' out of a material that appeared to be (or may have been) 'gatorfoam'. It's a composite of a foam core with smooth plastic sheeting on either side about 1/4" thick that's very light and somewhat flexible. (I'll come back to the "somewhat "in a minute) The headliner material was then affixed to this with (presumably) a spray or rolled adhesive. The glue must be susceptible to moisture because my headliner started to sag and was literally falling into the interior! Good thing the sunroof jammed in a partially open postion at about the same time (although 3 am between SLC and Montana on a -10 night was a bad time!) Attempting to repair the sunroof in the car was not a good idea; what appeared to be a cardboard- backed headliner "broke" at it's weakest point-the thin area between the upper roofrail and the sunroof. (L&R) I simply had an upholstery shop cut a new headliner (1 piece) out of gaterfoam and sprung for some new material which was glued on. Perhaps the installer of your sunroof thought it was easier to "splice" another piece in around the sunroof, mate it to the existing factory piece, and this is what's causing the problem.

I had the same problem with my dealer installed ASC sunroof.

They don't use a traditional type headliner board.

They just kind of used glue to attach it to what is up there, and where it is attached to the "perimeter" is what keeps it "taught".

Clear as mud?

I had a shop do mine and it cost twice as much as a regular headliner.

Exepnsive, but it did look awesome...

I am getting ready to take my sunroof out and seal the hole anyway...

I will take pics when I do...

Yeah, that's what it feels like. I guess I'll have to see what's in store for me when I get it pulled off. I checked a few shops around here, but they all quoted me around $500  . MUCH more than a weekend or two of creativity are worth to me. I'd rather build something myself that works for the headliner and spend the cash on an alky kit so I can really scare my friends. :D

$500! Krykies!

Mine was 1/2 that and I was pissed...

FYI, they make a 22x38 pop up style moon roof that can fill the hole left by an astroroof if anyone needs to replace theirs.

The roof around my astroroof is all rusted out so I am replacing it with a pop up style roof. No pan and motor. Should save 100lbs!

Check out the Newport 2238.

I hope to have it installed by next week. I will be sure to take pics of the old one coming out, and the new one going in.
