I've ported the heads and intake.

Put in the new 87 ECM and Thrasher chip

Installed Blue Tops with my new TA33C turbo

...but the car just wont run right.
It feels entirely like it has a miss. Idles great - 45 PSI static FP. Any throttle under load (in drive) and it misses a lil. I tried turning FP down but no change to the problem.

Scott Simpson is burning me a stock chip for blue tops to see if thats the problem.

Question - do I need the blue tops ?

I could just convert back to stock ECM and injectors 'cause i'm not sure if either might be the cause of my problems....

OR do I keep the ECM and go to stock injectors ?

Whats the benifit to blue tops here ?
Its a street car that wont see any track time at all.....(or any street time if I cant get her to run right !!!)

Upon changing the ECM and Chip...did you change the MAF to a 86/87 unit?

Stay with the Blue Top injectors. With the TA-33 Turbo they complament eachother, and they are a very big improvement over the stock 18 year old injectors.

Are all of the fuel injector plugs fully plugged in?

Have you checked all the spark plugs to read each one?

If an injector is not firing you will be able to tell right away when you remove the Spark plugs.

Not that you don't know what's what but I remeber that there were 2 different blue tops, one light one darker blue and one of them sucks for our cars.I'd bet it is going to be your coilpack or module though(check for 12k resistance),did you convert that too? Change the plugs even if they are new and check each wire with your ohmeter. That car should move out pretty good when you get it right, low 13 high 12's should'nt be a problem. You can take alot of meat out of that turbo to intake adapter too.Alchy is a must for a hot air IMO.Good luck..

are you running the egr system on your car?

i was running the thrasher #36 streeet chip with no egr system

streets chips like the thrasher , use egr and generally compensate that into the timing. SO i just learned , lol

I thought i could just plug the hoses and forget it,
generally if you dont want a egr system, it does need to be be taken out of the program.
my car would buck and ping like crazy, but not until i reached around 8 psi in boost, other then that, there was no signs off a miss.

i chased this problem for a while, and we have the identical setup, cept i have the stock cam.
it doesnt hurt to double check the connections and make sure the hoses are new and ran properly.

try double checking all hoses and connections for leaks before ya start throwin money at it, like i did

maybe ya need to switch to the Impala maf with the translator
tho i dunno if this is a must tho, when upgrading yer ecm
i replaced mine before i could try the stock Maf.

and or, double checked our IAC and Tps settings

and #45 static seems pretty high for a hot-air
lower it down, to bout 40-42 )where mine is)
even with the turbo intake and heads, I i dont think u would even need that much

just some ideas, doesnt hurt to look into things, instead of spendind your beer money :D

Sorry guys - haven't updated my sig.

I have the Translator and 3" Impala SS MAF. The 87 Ignition module, coil and wires are new also but I will check their resistance.

I am running the stock EGR too.

I pulled the plugs today in the searing heat. I found that plug #6 (hardest one to get to near firewall under DP) was coated in black and all others were proper tan / brownish colour.

I had to repair the #6 wire too as I yanked it out of the boot.

New plugs - went for a drive - nope. It seems to be a miss almost or bad timing. It runs great once you get about 5 lbs of boost or so...but it takes forever to get there. Plus - I cant build ANY boost against the brake, even with full throttle ! Like I said - it idles fine too.....

I still have my CAT on the car and Scott Simpson (Thrasher guy) feels this may be the problem - but i'm not so sure.

I tried playing with the FP - dropping it down to 40 (static) then 38 but still no good.

Bigtime hesitation when you drop the pedal too from a standstill....doesn't recognize you have pushed the throttle for a couple seconds...

I'm running outta ideas guys....help

Maybe that #6 injector is stuck open. That would explain the bad spoolup too.I would check the compression if you have the time and compare your reading for 6 to the others.PITA ,but it will comfort you if it's ok.Does the convertor smell like eggs or hiss real loud when your on it?Seems that would be more of a problem once you started boosting rather than at idle.

Try without

I haven't seen your reply to the cat question but, if it's never been changed that can be your problem. My 2000 Silverado has dual cats. Heading to Bowling Green last year it ran really bad. Weak on power and ran high rpms. Left side cat feel apart. If you can run a test pipe your problem may be solved.

hows yer FP regulator and the boost like to the back on the intake?

i have an accufab regulator, and that thing is a peice of junk, 2nd one i have gone thru,

i been using the Regulator out of the 89 TA, pressure rises alot better and is alot steadier.

somes times it'd belch out black smoke other times it would be lean

ever put a guage on the rail and go for a ride, u probli have
mine woudl rise to about 8 psi and just start going nuts

i dunno
just an idea

I have a 'stock' brand new CAT on it - no plug up worries there - no bad egg smell or anything.

Wires and coil ohms checked out ok also.

I dont seem to be having any problems with my FP reg...but I have never taken it for a drive with a guage on it....the hose is too short. When its hooked up the FP has no problem staying up there if I rev it at idle tho...

I took the ford blue top injectors out last night and dropped them off to an injector shop for testing and cleaning.

Pulled plug #6 again (after plug change and drive again) and it looked ok...but im still suspicious of #6 injector. I marked all the injectors with tape to see what results I get at the injector shop - explaining to the shop my problem.

The pressure holds well after shut down tho...drops to 30 lbs at the rail and stays there....would that not show me that I dont have a 'stuck open' injector ?

I get um back Friday....so i'll see how they tested out.

Guys, i'm tempted to put the stockers back on and just use them...they worked great (they were cleaned and flow tested).

Do I really need the blue tops ????

Guys - update - I was right. #6 Injector was plugged up with dirt. Got 'um back from the shop today and installed them. Car now runs like a dream.

Thanks everyone for the help !
