I've been having a problem with my car for the last 2 weeks.

Once every so often it stops running mid stride. I don't mean under boost. Just normal daily driving. I've had it towed 3 times in the last week!:(

When the car stops running, it will fire back up but only stay running for 3 seconds then dies. Funny thing is : next day it runs FINE! And may continue to do so for several days!

Replaced fuel filter / fuel pump / installed FP gauge since I thought it would be a fuel problem. Swapped out Coil Pack and STILL didnt make a difference.

Then, when I realized this only happened once when it was raining and twice shortly after car washes. I had it washed , replicated the problem and looked under hood for water. Only found water behind each headlight cluster. Checked ECM plug off battery; it was fine. Checked under vacuum canister: the filter was SOAKED! Not to mention full of mildew and muck! Removed it.... car runs fine.

Think I really solved this problem? Or maybe it dried out when I was monkeyin around with it? Feedback pls! I'm scared to drive too far for fear of being towed home again! (maybe I should buy a tow truck next?!?!) ;)

Thanks!

check your crank position sensor after rain/wash. if it gets wet i believe the car will shut off and wont start till it dries. i used to have a Taurus SHO and i remember guys saying if the cxrank sensor gets wet the car will die and leave you stuck. i would check into this. HTH:)

IMO,
I dont think a nasty cannister filter can cause the problem you
are having, so keep looking or you might end up on the hook
for the 4th time:mad:

Try this,
get a spray bottle filled with water, and spray down the coil
pack area while the engine is running, look for sparks and
listen for misfire, try a little brake torque and see how it runs.
Also, make sure you're not getting water in your computer.
I had a water leak on mine once, that leaked right into the ecm
and made the car do some crazy sh*# after a rain storm.
LOL

Just another idea......probably not it....but easy to check......look for a burned wire by the Down Pipe area.....it could be grounding the car's engine. The extra water might be all the add'l conductivity it needs to cause this !

Good luck!

When you replaced the coil pack how did the contacts for the ignition module look? This is a common area for corrosion issues & could very well be PART of the problem.

With a filthy filter (charcol canister or the air filter?), sounds like you need to take some time and do a complete spring cleaning tune-up!!! Check out the Tech Articles at www.gnttype.org for a good how-to.
