I have a '94 Mazda protege for a daily driver with 175K+. since I bought the car, its neede cv axles...but, for what I paid for the car, I really didnt put it on the top of my list. While driving down the highway this after noon, the car started pulling HARD right, then would clear up, and start pulling again. I got to the shop, went inside and came back out to try to drive it again, Put it in reverse, stopped and put it in drive. When I put it in drive I heard a "pop" and then grinding and the car is moving no where, and when you put the car in park grom any gear, you can hear the parking prawl engaging. Now the Transmission has NEVER had any problems, so do you guys thing the bearings in the CV axles went? has Anyone ever heard of an extremely worn out CV axle doing something like this?

My first thought is that one axle has popped out of the transaxle and is almost engaged (the inner splines on the axle). Can you hear if the noise is mainly on one side of the transaxle?
