i am going to by my first car and it is a 1984 t-type. and i need help with the setting the timing.

What do you mean by setting the timing? It's controlled by the computer and is not adjustable except by the chip. The only thing there is to set is the cam sensor which is where the distributor would be on a normal V6. There's a procudure for that, I'm sure someone has a link. Are you having problems with the car?

I'd be careful what you buy. If it runs, there's a 99% chance that timing is ok. If it doesnt run, you might want to wait until they get it running to make sure it isn't a serious problem. The laptop is used for tuning to get the most out of it and to keep from blowing it up when you really start to push it. You can use it to monitor all the sensors but it can't tell you the position of the cam sensor. It can tell you the timing but you can't change it without changing chips. Do you have any history on the car, like any recent repairs?

the engine has an all new turbo and its bored over .40 it has almost all new internals, pistons ect im not sure what he has done as far as the cam. But it runs good. he told me that the timing just need to be set and it would run like brand new. There is a knock so thats why he thinks its the timing

If it runs good, it's 100% not the timing. If it were that simple, I'm sure it would be "set" by now. What boost level does it knock at? First upgrades are a fuel pump and adjustable FP regulator. If it's on the stock pump this could explain it. How much boost is it running? It's also necessary to find out what chip it has. A race chip will knock badly on pump gas. Also, stock injectors could be clogged. If you can hear the knock with your ears you are in the danger zone. You need a program like turbo link or direct scan or even a scan master to detect knock. They detect it way before you can hear it.

i figured it out i was talking to the guy about it beging bored over .40 that the timing would be different because it was bored. so i need to buy a msd boost timing controller:D

Noooooo! It's not the timing and the size of the bore has nothing to do with it. The stock computer is way better than the MSD boost timing retarder. If someone is telling you this, run away from the car.

I have to agree--don't mess with that MSD stuff especially if this is a street car. As far as timing setting, if the car runs, it's fine. if you heara spark knock at higher boost upgrade the fuel pump and step up to a 30-32 lb injector set. Almost bet money the injectors are the OE ones and are pretty well clogged, and these cars tend to lean out under boost as it is.

thanks for your help i will see what i can do with the car. it is not really a knock its more like a ping. any ideas

Try running higher octane fuel [not additives] to see if the pinging goes away. Make sure it is not a wiped cam or a rod knock. Get the full story about this car along with the paperwork from the rebuild and who did it.

It sounds to me like the owner knows more than he is telling you. Anyone who owns one knows you can't set the timing.

;) I'll have to disagree and say the owner probably knows substantially LESS than he thinks he does!

(I'll leave it at that!)

Make sure this does not have the boost to the sky with no work done to it, if you really are going to buy it thats great but be careful. Run some good fuel and make sure the gas in it is not real old. When you get the car if you do go over every vac line and exhuast leak. See if he has any fuel add on's like adj reg or fuel pump, if not make sure the waste gate rod has not been cut to raise the boost, jist some thing to look out for.

good luck and have fun:)
