I pulled my 87' GN out of the driveway and put the shifter in park, but it was still stuck in drive. I pulled the shifter back down into drive and it wouldn't go back into park. I had to turn the car off in drive and now cant turn it back on or get the key out. How can I start my car to pull it back in the driveway? I couldn't tell if there was something wrong with the linkage by looking at it. I really need to get my car back in the driveway. It wont go into neutral or anything.

grab the column by the dash an turn it . SOUNDS LIKE YA BROKE A CABLE.

Sounds like shifter cable problems. Was the "feel" of the shifter easier? It will still have the detents but not the pull and push of the cable.
Set the parking brake and take a look under the car at the side of the transmission to see if the end of the cable is moving with the shifter. If not you can put it into park from under the car. Take a look and let us know. Jon Hanson

I've tried turning the column with my hand and it wont turn. The shifter does move freely between park and 1. Tried to turn linkage arm going into the transmission with my hand but no go. The cable seems to be stuck out but I didn't want to try and force anything. I sprayed everything down with PB to make sure it wasn't just cold and jammed. I may need a new cable? It shouldn't be a transmission issue correct? Just the cable?

I had the same thing exactly happen to me and the cable is broken and jammed. Disconnect the cable from the transmission and then the column will turn and you can get the car into park and after it's cranked you can shift to drive. I drove my car like this for a couple of months until I got back to my mechanic.
