My 86 T-Type is running poorly!! it barely idles and backfires when driving. also sounds like it running on 5 cylinders. I changed the plugs & wires and was running great for about 1 week. I also changed the chip (Jet chip). I thought maybe it was the chip so I put back the original but no change. I have verified all the plugs & wires and they are fine. I checked all Vacuum lines and no issues there. So far I have had people tell me its either the CoilPack or the MAF sensor. Anyone have any other insights??

Got any scanmaster numbers? Without some more info it is just going to be shots in the dark.

Have you checked to see f any unmetered air is getting into the engine. If air can get it without the maf seeing it then you will have those symptoms.

Are you still using the original MAF black flex hose? if so check for ripe or open throughout the black flex hose
If you do have the original MAF, you might need to clean it with a can of CRC MAF sensor cleaner.

Definitely need a scan master. Makes diagnosing much easier. Also don't use that JetChip.

if u aint got an ohm meter, pull a wire off while running, one ata a time.if it dont change idle thats an issue.

Is there a problem with the Jet Chip?? I have not had the car scanned yet. I have ordered a New Accel Coil Pack and will install it. Most of the people I have talked with seem to think thats the problem as they have had similar problems and it was indeed the coil pack. So here's hoping. Will post results!

Read this post very carefully: STAY AWAY FROM ACCEL. Went down that road when I was new to the car, and it lasted maybe a week? These cars EXTREMELY picky when it comes to parts, and the coil pack and control module is an area that they're picky. If it turns out that you're coil pack is shot, order one from NOS4GN.com and be done with it. Get the expensive one.

I also dont recommend throwing chips in a car that you have NO WAY of monitoring. Again, these cars are very picky, and I personally, have never even heard of a jet chip. Sounds dangerous. Lol. Good luck

I installed the Accel Coil pack and no change... car still the same. got it scanned and it is the MAF sensor.. I can tap it and the car smooths out but not perfect. Found a guy in Ontario with an NOS MAF sensor and I bought it from him. should have it next week.
I bought the Jet chip from Autopartswarehouse.

Return the jet chip and get a turbo tweak chip...... Unless you would like to keep the car all original, get a maf translator and lt1 or ls1 maf sensor. The stock mafs have tendencies to do what they did to you.

I would prefer to keep car as original as possible. Which turbo Tweak chip do you recommend?? Remeber the car is stock except for K&N's better plugs & wires. Don't think I can return Jet Chip as It has been used.

well the plugs you can't see and the wires are grey and look just like the original ones! I don't mind doing minor mods or upgrades like that that don't really change the look of the car. Just gives better performance over the stock ones without really altering the look of the car. Same can be said for the K&N filters. I do have the original air box componants.

If you go to turbotweak.com, and go to click on ordering a chip, choose the 5.7 version because of the fact you don't have mods. Once you do that, you have a questionnaire there you fill out based on what mods you have. Submit the order and pay. Eric will then burn you an appropriate chip for those mods. The chill will improve cold startups especially when it's winter weather. You can also state what boost you want to run. On a stock turbo with 93, you should be able to hit 16-17, but you can also ask Eric his recommendation for boost levels on whatever octane you are gonna use base on your stock parts. He knows better than most, he's been burning chips for a while now.

You could always do stock appearing mods. With a completely stock car those are the best ones!

You can't see chips, fuel pumps, or ported stock anything (heads, intake, throttle body, etc.) much less anything inside the motor. There's lots you can do and no one would be the wiser. There was a time where I wanted to keep everything looking stock as well. And by "time," I mean like two weeks.
