I remember in my high school the guy that taught senior English would show up every morning just reeking of whiskey. He was definitely a functioning alcoholic; but taught that class damn well!
Same went for my high school Latin teacher. We could tell if he'd gone out drinking the night before, because we'd come in, he'd turn out the lights and put a movie on so he could sleep it off.
The English teacher finally retired (the year he got a DUI on his way in to school), and the Latin teacher was fired after allegedly fighting a student (they'd been trying to fire him since about '98, and did it just this year). Now THAT is job security!
