I'm in the process of building a back porch patio covering. The roof is going to be flat with a 8" drop over 8 feet, and covered with rolled asphault/mineral roofing material.

My question is just how to secure this stuff at the edges where there is not going to be another layer over it to keep it from leaking thru the nail holes, if I am to nail it down?? (Actually I guess I have the same issue on one side of each roll laid)
I have some black plastic roofing cement I used on a metal roof building a while back to seal up nail holes...do I use this stuff and just cover up the nails used to secure the roofing and also on the seams??

I plan to put a layer of tar paper down
Then the edge flashing,
then the rolled asphault
then come back over the seams and nails with the plastic roof cement.
Is this correct or should the cement stuff also be applied under the rolled asphault to help secure it or is the nails enough if that correct?

Thanks

Thanks for the link John. I noticed this morning on the packaging there's also a diagram. Looks like I put a 2" wide layer of the cement down around the entire perimeter of the sheet then nail thru it from the top side. May put a layer on top of the nails to be safe. I have a 5 gal bucket of the cement stuff if its still good.

Is the best for a flat or metal roof. It never has to be removed (recoat every 10 years). Is much cooler and a lot easier to repair. How large is the are you are building? It does have to go over untreated ply wood. If you would like I can see if there is a Rep in your area. It goes on like paint.

I would check with a roofing company. I have installed some rubber roofs for a shop i used to work at. What i am thinking about is the screws that held that down. they have a big plastic washer on them with glue on the bottom of them. check them out.

Unfortunately I'm using 1x4 tongue and grooved slats. The size is 8x20' and then a second one that is 12x12'.
I was talking to my neighbor last night, and he runs a apartment remodeling firm, he's going to have one of his roof guys do it on their spare time using the heated tar/cement stuff. He did his roof and its got less pitch than mine and it looks like it will never come off, its some sort of epoxy applied stuff and different asphualt than the roll stuff, so I'll take back the rolls I bought.

Thanks guy for the tips.
