How do I extract trouble codes?

My '99 Suburban is giving me the SES light. Can these be easily accessed like the earlier vehicles or does it have to go to the dealer? I realize this isn't TR related so e-mail me directly w/responses please.

99 makes it OBDII compliant, and as such you'll need a scan tool that can "talk" OBDII to read/clear the codes.

I don't have a scan tool for this truck. I'll have to buy one or send it to the dealer, I guess. Thanks Dave.
