Hello Guys,

My GN has been hybernating for 1 year cause I could not pass the emissions. Now I want to put insurance on the car and I know I will be driving no more than 2000 miles a year. How do I get my car insurance excempt. I have daily drivers. I talked to my Allstate insurance agent....seems kinda clueless with show car insurance. Any catches with show car insurance..i know i can't drive it to work or anything but can i drive it for "leisure driving"
TIA

every state has its own rules so look at it and try to find a loop hole. I just recently put plates on my 75 vega(that i sold yesterday :( ) it smokes like 3 and a half freight trains, i found that the county next to me didn't require emissions testing, so i foudn someone who lived there, had the car geristered through their address and got my plates with no questions asked. Your gn is probably too young for collector plates, it woudl be around here but check into that too, they usually dont' require emission testing.

Try an insurance company that handles classics like J.C. Taylor. I have my GSX with them at a cost of $125 per year.

Cost me 244 a year for collectors insurance. 2500 miles a year allowed. Can't be a daily driver. Also must have primary car 10 years or newer. And if I do the paperwork with MV no inspection in NJ

You can get collector insurance if you don't drive the car much, but keep in mind that it has NOTHING to do with your state's motor vechicle laws. Here in NJ (as alluded to above), you can get "collector registration" for cars 15-25 years old that are driven less than 3,000 miles per year. No inspection and collector's insurance is required.

I used Parrish-Heacock who is an agent for Great American or something like that.

Bottom line - check with your DMV to see if there is a collector or classic status for the car that would exempt you from inspection. Insurance has little to do with it.

Good luck,
Jim

www.grundy.com They let you decide a value of your car then they give you a set rate no deductible. Mine is $380.00 a year with $25000.00 in coverage. they will give you a free price quote

That's a lot more restrictive than NJ's langauge. They don't care where/when you drive it as long as it's 3,000 miles per year or less. They require collector's insurance, which contains the limited use langauge. Even most collector's policies do not limit you to just organized "sporting events". My policy limits my use to occasional drives, shows, and other events. I can't (technically) use the car to get to work or as a replacement car if another one breaks. The language you linked to says you can only drive the car to organized racing events which is pretty restrictive.

Collectors registration

Did you ever get your collectors registration in NJ. I've got about a year left on my inspection. What is the form # to get that registration? I remember you getting alittle bit of a run around when you were getting yours.

I don't know the form number, but if you ask for a "collector vehicle registration application" at your local DMV they should know about it. The DMV in Somerville didn't know, but the Ledgewood one did. A lot of cops I've talked to don't even know what it is.

But yes, I do have the form. It has to be submitted at the time of registration renewal. I forget what the fee is, but it's less than regular registration and good for 2 years. Once they issue you the collector registration, you go to the local inspection station for a mileage check (they say an odometer lock may be required, whatever that is). Once they record the mileage you get an orange triangle in place of your inspection sticker (no inspection required). They check the mileage again in 2 years.

My registration is up in June. I'll let you know how I make out.

Jim

Thanks Jim . When you do it in June post how you made out. Knowing MV something iextra is going to come out.

The is no "inspection" or "hot stickers" in Illinois.

I will tell you - there should be no reason you can't get your car to pass the Illinois IM240.

Bolt in a fresh CAT, mild chip for your injectors and GO!

My 86 had passed cleaner then my 1995 Cutlass did.

Why beat the system when we have cars that can PASS it???

In case you still don't want to bother - you need to get your insurance to classify it as a "collector" vehicle. My buddy mike has his insured with some collector car company. No work driving, weekends only, less then 1000 miles per year I think. He is on vacation, I will get the details when he gets back next week.

The "Air Team" folks want your insurance to classify it as a collector show car before they will exempt you. In Illinois, for the DMV the car has to be at least 20 years old to qualify.

If you want to drive it more then to car shows and parades - you will probably just want to get it to pass.

Check with Rally Insurance group. There should be a link on our website - chicagolandbuick.org You can get collector car insurance with up to 3,000 miles per year, I'm pretty sure.

Watch out for the antique plates, though. We know a friend that got the plates for his 70 Skylark, and got pulled over for driving to work on a Thursday. They do check for that. Although the turbo cars aren't old enough, now that I think about it.

HTH.

That IL document seems odd for a "race" car. If you don't insure it, you can't drive it on the street. If you can't drive it on the street, why get plates? No plates = no emissions testing.

What about driving to the track? Then you need insurance, plates and emissions. Guess it will be an ugly "show" car. :D
