Still learning by the day, looking at the RJC boost controller. From the website i get the impression that once set, the boost can be held off by the regulator and then hits all at once.
With my stockish set up, boost starts low and builds progressively.
With the Boost controller does the boost come in all at once and if so, doesn't this make for a very sudden increase in power?

I only ask as I managed to turn my car around by hitting too much boost and wonded if the Boost controller would make the car even more unpredictable to the unwary newbie=me?!
Just trying to learn more

I'm kinda wondering the same thing.

I think it works this way though.... With the stock setup as soon as boost starts to build, the wastegate puck is being slowly opened all the time, until the level of boost determined by the chip is reached, then it's (puck) held in place for as long as your foot is planted.

Now, with the boost controller, I THINK the controller stops the puck from being opened until max pressure (let's just use 17 PSI for an example) is reached & then when 17 PSI hits, the puck is allowed to open, bleeding off the excess.

The stock setup is always loosing boost pressure at all levels, making spool-up slower. The controller allows it to build with zero loss as pressure is increasing.

It will still be a linear increase like "stock", only faster & maybe a little more violent. It won't all hit at once like you're thinking.

Make sense to you now??

If I am wrong, experts please correct me.

Thanks, thats useful to know. Being new to turbo's i'm interested in both theory and seat of the pants experience. Anyone else?

The RJC boost controller doesn't work like you think. It works with the wastegate, which actually lets you maintain boost. So say in a stock application, the wastegate opens at 16 psi so you do not get more boost than this. Well it actually starts to open at say 12 psi. So it takes you longer to get to 16 psi since you are bleeding off boost while trying to get to 16 psi. What the RJC boost controller does it keeps the boost from opening the wastegate until a set psi. So say if you set if for 16 psi, the wastegate will not open until then since the checkball inside the controller stays closed until then. This allows you to build boost faster, as turbo nasty stated. You can also use the controller to adjust your boost if you do not have an adjustable wastegate.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Aaah, thanks Chris, i think I understand now. Essentially, it allows more efficient and accurate use of boost? I do have an adjustable wastegate, but i'm also experiencing whatI think is boost creep. Appreciate the explanation:smile:

No problem. Glad I could help. If you have an overboosting problem, I don't think the RJC controller will help you. You need to port the puck hole to get the boost creep down.

Hi Miles,

I never really cured boost creep on my car. I didn't have a Dremel so I just filed away at the wastegate hole in the hope it would work.

I had an old (very old) Jay Carter alcohol kit and it was a life (engine) saver.

Many of my runs were a race between boost creeping from 18 psi to over 20 psi before the end of the quarter mile came up.

Luckily the alcohol kept knock in check and the boost creep helped me run 109mph on a stock motor, stock intercooler, TA49, TH downpipe.

But hey I used to run 25psi of boost with just an external pump and some Toluene in the old, old days.

It's a wonder it hung together.

P.S. Cheers for phoning and leaving the message. On the mend now.

Hi Sandy,
Glad you are feeling better.
Just confirmed my order for the boost controller and alky kit, so I guess i'l be on a new learning curve soon:biggrin:

I like my RJC Boost controller on my 89 TTA - TA49 / 19.5 lbs i do not race my car but enjoy my full throttle blasts. It puts you into Boost fast so much so i also put one on my 1980 TTA (Carb/Turbo) and it eliminated the lag that is characteristic with this car. My 1980 is now more fun to drive!
