How does Tennessee operate it's inspection program

I'm traveling to Memphis/Germantown for an automotive training project and have questions regarding TN emissions and safety inspections.

SAFETY INSPECTION;
Is a vehicle safety inspection required?
If so, is a visual inspection of emission equipment performed?
How often must a vehicle be inspected?
Are there exemptions for vehicle age?
Does the program apply to cars, trucks and motorcycles?

EMISSIONS INSPECTION;
Are emissions inspection stations state operated or privately operated?
What model years require inspection?
Are '96 up OBD?
Is IM240 still used?
Are any diesels exempt?
Is EMI testing a prerequisite to sell a vehicle?

Thanks
Andy

I live and work in Knoxville Tn and we have no safety or emissions inspections on this side of the state, not sure about Memphis or Nashville, hope this helps. Greg

Memphis isn't on the list anymore. In brief, the affected area is Nashville and the contiguous counties surrounding it + Chattanooga. Testing is done on any light-duty motor vehicle annually prior to registration that are newer than 1975 (as I understand it).
