How does the mechanic's lein process work in NY??

Hi folks,

Does anyone know how the mechanic's lein process works in NY?

A mechanic friend of mine has a nice 1990 Corvette I have my eye one, the customer has not paid his bill (in the shop since Nov '04) and he says he is going to put a lien on it.

lein is made in the amount owed to mechanic, takes some time owner of car is notified by law of lein and such

I think the question wlaukaitis is asking is, can the mechanic hold the vehicle until due payment is made, and at what point is the vehicle considered legally surrendered to reconcile lein? Good question, actually I'd like to know too.

This is much the same as a towing place holding the vehicle until the check is paid.

I ran into this nightmare about 10 years ago when my truck was illegally ordered to be towed by the local Barney Fifes. I had to pay $260 for the "Priority Tow" charge to the fukrz who towed it all of 1/3 of a mile to their yard. They smiled at me and said they were exibiting a "mechanic's lein" on it until the bill was paid. Ohhhhhh, just the memory of it....

Ok, according to the MV901a, there would be a lein for the amount of repairs as well as storage fees. The owner has 10 days after being served to retrive said vehicle and the auction can be 15 days after the serving of the paperwork.

He told me there are services that do this kind of thing for about $150

have you done this before?? or something?

Not personally I had a ex coworker who did it cause mustang he bought had lost title and couldnt locate the guy he bought from no biggie but I would automatically assume the guy would want his vette back, I know I would if that were mine but then again I have more in my 396 juice motor then my car is worth....
If your really interested I could ask how this is done exactly I know he paid some filling fee of some sort

I am sure the guy would want his Vette back to. From what I have been hearing he and his dad are total losers.

The Mech could have something up his sleeve though. He told me that the guy who has this vette loved it until..............he found this new girlfriend. So it is no longer his "baby"

It would be nice to pick up a 1990 Vette with 62k and a 6-speed for $3000
