How hard is it to remove the turbo? I need details on how to take it off..I want to take it off and shine it up a bit and reinstall it.. I know what you guys are going to say! If your taking it off just replace it with a larger turbo...I know, I know! Dont have the dough! So for now I just want to make her look alittle prettier.. I saw a pic of a turbo done on another thread and it looked great! Also, Is there a paint that I can use on the god aweful looking rusty portion? I have high heat 500 degree paint but dont know if that will hold up..Does that braiding crap come off the up and downpipes? If so is it a good idea to take it off? Will it harm anything?

Thanks Guys!

The braiding on the downpipe is for decoration. The braiding on the uppipe is necessary to cover the two separate pipes inside. This allows flexibility on the install. Take-care. Brad

ok, lets try this

How hard is it to remove the turbo? Its a PITA. I know you said someone would say this but, just hold off and wait till you get the money to replace the turbo and do it then. now if you have loads of free time then i guess go ahead.

my setup is alot different but let me see how my memory is. you have to take the 3 up-pipe nuts off, 2 downpipe bolts, 1 bolt in the back of the turbo mouting the turbo to the intake, 2 nuts off the heatsheild holding the turbo, oil feed line, air inlet pipe, vac hoses, thorttle linkage,TB coolant lines if you still have them or just remove throttle body, and thats about it. lots of lube to get the oring to slide out. i think thats it. Man ITS a PITA, if your going that far IMOP do the injectors as well.

Is there a paint that I can use on the god aweful looking rusty portion? NO, this piece needs to be jet hot coated. nothing else IMOP will hold up on the hotair turbo.

Does that braiding crap come off the up and downpipes? If so is it a good idea to take it off? Will it harm anything? yes it will come off, however leave it on. the up-pipe needs it where it joins toghter. the downpipe doesnt need it but if you take it off the engine bay temps will go up alot.

hope this helps

Yeah, 500 paint will burn off... I learned that the hard way:rolleyes: I would use 1000+ flame proof exhaust paint, that`s what I use... you can find it at AZ. I wouldn`t even take it off, you could just clean it with engine cleaner and a steel wool pad(brillo/sos) unless you plan to sand blast it like I did? Just seal the holes up real well, I got sand in my 85 turbo and had to open it and clean it out:(

Thanks guys I appreciate it! Just getting board now that I have nothing else I can do at this point to the car..Atleast nothing else that I can afford to do!

I agree with everyone else taking it off is easy!Putting it back on is a PITA.... I tried the painting trick and was not very happy with the results however try this stuff Calyx Manifold Dressing
it worked like a charm was super easy to apply and a year later it still looks great, of course a years worth of driving for me is like 1500 miles
