What is the amount of bore removed in mm or other increment so I can visualize

.30 overbore

.150 of material. 1/8 in. is .125---does this help?

oops. Didn't realize you wrote 0.3 bore - but I think you meant 0.030", which is a pretty typical overbore for a block re-build. 0.3" is way too much.

one thing to remember .030 comes off the dia. so the wall thickness is .015 thinner. that is not much. a human hair is like .005

Wow that's almost nothing. Some water was sitting on the block and started to rust a little. Looks pretty much like surface but now I'm worried cause I can hang a nail on some of the rust markings. I figured it will all come out when it gets bored but now I'm not so sure.

no you will be fine. surface rust builds on the surface also so it is not deep. probably less than .001. you will be fine.

Hairs do differ some of them about .005 or thinner for a blonde hair. A nice crisp dollar bill is farily consistent at 5 thousandths.

so you would need a nice crisp dollar bill and a nice crisp 2 dollar bill to have 15 thousandths????? this is why they need to make 3 dollar bills

Everyone seems to go with a .030 over, imo, it makes little sense.

As far as I know, the block is used up at .040, so why someone would go right to 30 over if they did not absolutely have to is beyond me, that extra ~5 cubic inches means nothing.

If and when I ever have to rebuild, I will not overbore unless absolutely necessary, and then maybe .010.

The block is used up when the sonic check says it is. There is no magic number. Pistons are readily available at .030 overbore.

So you would have no problem paying top dollar for a block that was 30 or 40 over as long as the sonic check was ok?

Maybe you would, I would look for one that had not been bored out.

My point is, it seems many do it for no reason.
