How much to gain parting out 86 GN

There is an 86 GN in my town for sale. Needs lots of work. I have been on the lookout for a parts car for a while now to keep some goodies as backup on my shelf. This car has been for sale for about 5 months now. He was asking 10k then went to 8k last week. It has the digital cluster so I cant see the mileage. I was just wondering from you guys that have sold alot of parts and parted out one of these cars how much can be made. What is it worth to pay for one to recoup your money?

Like I said it is in rough shape and I would not pay anywhere near what hes asking right now. Please dont start with "I cant believe you would buy one just to part it". The car has seen its better days and he is smoking crack thinking he can get anywhere near his asking price. I would not tear apart a car worth saving.

While I agree in part to the 'save it at all costs' camp, I am also a realist and understand that parts cars keep all of our 22+ year old cars running. Especially since the aftermarket has really kicked in with our cars yet. If the car is all there, and you could get it for a couple thousand, you could make your money back.

Sean I have been looking for a "couple of thousand" car for 5 years now. This guy is asking WAY too much for this car. Compared to what I see on these boards and ebay he is out of the ballpark. I just dont know what he would go down to. Months ago on the phone his price was firm. I just dont want to call him back and make an offer and not get my money back on parting it. I have done some prelimnary searchs on the For Sale section and added up some items but its better if I can get a real world figure of what someone is actually getting for parts in this market right now.

I cant "save" it. If I brought it home and didnt start showing money coming back my wife would leave me. Hey...theres an idea....

If its that bad then the parts are at best rated 6-10 or less on body parts. If you cant get it for $2K & have the time & $$$ to sell the parts over a few years then walk away. Its not for you. Grumpy has been sitting on parts for 15+ years & they are still sitting there. He doesnt need the $$ & get his price. Can you afford that? I would guess no as most of us cant. Its also a LOT od work to part it correctly & do you have the Time? Tools? maybe a Lift? Good strong back & the enthusiasim to do it after coming home from regular work day? What about the wife & kids? Will they understand dad is Busy Again!

If the car comes down in price to where you think it may be worth it go for it!! But you have to look at what's still good on the car. Also if you end up keeping a bunch of spares that will make it tougher to get your money back. I just parted an 87' Limited which I paid decent money for, but i was after the motor and trans with hopes of getting my money back and ending up with a free motor and trans. I must admit this takes a ton of time to do and you get the money back in bits in pieces and it's easy to spend the money as it comes in when you don't have one big chunk to put in the bank.

People don't understand what you go threw to piece out a car . It's very time consuming and then ya need the room to stockpile the parts. I have a 28'X60' attic, 28'X50" basement full of "stuff" Ya some I have had since I did my first parts car in 86. I also had parts at other places .. 40'X60" barn and a "yard" where I kept the whole cars I have 1 parts car left to finish stripping. :biggrin:
Oh I will not give the parts away.. Matter of fact I go threw "stuff" every now an then when I get in the "mood" . Now I am actually throwing some of it away.. Smaller stuff I just leave alone . TTA specific parts I hoard. :biggrin:

Good advice from all. I am building a house with a shop later this year. I guess I need to wait until then before I even consider working on second TR.

Kinda tight in my little garage with my GN and my wifes suburban. Maybe she can park hers outside... :redface:

Also keep in mind that the prices you see on parts listed for sale are ASKING prices, and you likely won't get what they are asking. I frequent a junkyard full of gbodies and cherry pick some of the nicer, cheaper stuff to save from the crusher. Every time I list something for sale, I wind up selling it for what I paid for it. Removing, cleaning, inspecting, photographing, listing, negotiating, packaging, and shipping is a ton of work and has to be done for every part you wish to sell. And THEN you get into parts damaged in shipping, people claiming they didn't get them, or it had an insignificant flaw you didn't tell me about, paypal disputes, meeting strangers to deal, etc. It is a huge pain in the ass. Kudos to anyone who can successfully part an entire car.

Funny this post is going.

I stopped to look at an '84 yesterday and had the same thoughts.

Complete car but RUSTY!! Looked pretty stock and unmolested.
Full drivetrain with 8.5” rear, Lear seats, T-tops. Missing front bumper, console and other odds and ends.

Had the Fred Flintstone floor pan option too!! :biggrin:

Guy wanted $4,000 cause the car was pretty rare.

Hot air cars are hard to piece out. 86/87's are the ones to do if your goin to try and get your $$$ back and keep some of the parts for profit

I only looked at it for about 2 more minutes after he said $4,000. That's about $3,000 more than I would have offered. It would be spare parts for me most likely so I wouldn't want that much money sitting behind the barn.

I agree. He thinks he has more than he does.

If you do make her park outside,buy her a remote starter so she wont have to clear off windows in the cold or barbecue her butt on hot seats in the summer :biggrin:
